Phillips Academy Andover: ask a student.

I dont agree with any of these answers:
Q:Which year is the best year to begin Andover?
A: As a freshman.

I think the best year is as a new Lower. You get to have a “normal” high school experience, which helps you appreciate Andover more. I’ve also noticed that new lowers tend to be in higher classes (math excluded).

Q:Is there a way to connect on Facebook with other Andover students so my daughter meets a few (online) before she arrives?
A: There isn’t a way that I know of, but you shouldn’t worry because Andover is a loving place and all the students are very open towards each other. It’s really easy to make friends.

Yes. There are always facebook groups being created. Just look for phillips academy class of whatever. I’m sure there’s at least one already.

Which classes are the most popular?
History, Science and Art tend to be the most popular.

There aren’t really “popular” classes at Andover because people usually dont get to take electives until upper/senior year. When students do get to take electives the most popular are Psych, Science electives, and English electives.

Does anyone check to see if your room is clean?
No.

Yes. It’s called a fire expection. In some dorms it happens every other week. Your dorm doesnt have to be spotless but it has to be up to fire code.

Do you ever eat “family” style with upper and lower classmen and teachers?
We do somtimes, but that doesn’t happen very often.

In my four years I have not.

Why do you have exams? PA is on break.

Yeah, umm… Andover went on spring break last Thursday…

Also, there is no such thing as an “A” at Andover. We use a 0-6 grading scale.

Like my good friend DieterSama said, there are room inspections, fairly frequently, too… Usually once or twice a month.

Like DieterSama also said, we have no formal “sit-down” meals.

Finally… According to the Phillips Academy directory, the only Allison at Andover spells her name with two "L"s and you only spell your name with one. IMPOSTOR! And if you’re not… well, your desire to share Andover with others is admirable but I think it would be in your, and the school’s, best interests to learn a little more about your own school before you spread misinformation about it on the internet.

@DieterSama and TomTheCat, thanks for clearing that up!

I would really love to attend Andover, but unfortunately I got waitlisted. I’m in a tough situation right now, which is most likely not going to allow me to re apply next year.

I hope you guys have had a great Andover experience :)

Thank you!

However, you should always feel free to get in touch with the Admissions office if you’re still interested in going to Andover. Though Andover rarely takes kids off of the wait list, that’s not to say that they won’t if you’re able to show true interest by way of writing a thought-out letter, sending them a first-choice note, or maybe keeping them updated with your academic and extracurricular achievements.

However, I admire your attitude. As it sounds like you know, it’s not the end of the world for you! I wish all the other applicants had your same, positive outlook. Best of luck in all your future endeavors, and if you have any more questions about Andover, feel free to ask!

Yours,
