Phillips Academy, Andover

John Smith, I’m an Exonian too, but show some respect. It’s okay to be excited, but remember, we’re supposed to cheer our team on, not root against their team. Keep things positive.

Andover/Exeter may have been the best day at Andover so far, despite the… disheartening loss. I had so much fun cheering with my friends. Plus, I spent the first few hours dancing to dubstep in the science center and around campus, as well as talking to whoever looked at me and my friends.

P.S. You guys have AMAZING facilities!!

Sadie Hawkins dance was… less fun, to say the least. :P

But, to get back to my point, A/E isn’t meant to incite hatred. Not anymore, at least. For me, it brought two communities together who know nothing about each other. Really, no Andover student can pretend to know what it’s like to be an Exonian, and vice versa.

All of my friends love Andover, but as we boarded the buses, I definitely heard a few people say, “Wow, maybe I should’ve given Exeter a chance. It’s actually a pretty cool place.”

Random interjection over. Hahaha.

A little competition should not be misconstrued as hatred: [Exeter Crushes Andover](http://www.exeter.edu/news_and_events/news_events_12804.aspx)

Hey JohnSmithIII,

Congratulations on the win. I hope your experience at Exeter is truly enriched by the greater preponderance of strong, large, virile men.

Brawns with brains can’t hurt. :D

I went to cross country interschols (championship races with many NE prep schools sending their best) held at Andover on Saturday, and afterwards saw Andover and Exeter seniors exchanging school t shirts and hugging. I also noticed girls at the finish line cheering on all the runners by school name, though they went especially crazy for their own school. At the awards ceremony, there was lots of cheering for other teams, too. These rivalries are a kind of bond, and there’s plenty of respect even in the making-fun part (e.g., latest Phillipian has the fake Exonian, and Andover Facebook has photos of Dress Like an Exeter Nerd Day).

Does Andover accept many students from Australia? and if so, do they hav to be amazing? cause I really wanted to apply next year as it seems like a great school, but seeing some of the amazing stats on cc made me wonder whether its worth trying?

How hard would you say it is to adjust as a new 11th grader at Andover? On top of rigorous coursework and fitting in?

Hi I am applying to Andover and I just wanted to hear about the best parts of Andover and what you always remember and will take with you. I have visited many times because my sister went and I love the food, classrooms, and pretty much the whole campus. I actually do Harkness at my school, so I know ho that goes and absoutely love it. If anyone sees this and did or is attending Andover, I would appreciate it if you could give me some info. Thank you!

Hi Winthrop. In my opinion the best part of Andover, besides the facilities and gorgeous campus, is the student body. It’s such an incredible opportunity to be surrounded by students with an array of backgrounds and talents. Class discussions are always really interesting when you have the perspectives of intelligent students not only from around the country, but around the globe.

Please clarify with the most up-to-date info. Does Andover SEND their acceptance letters BEFORE the 10th so that admitted applicants RECEIVE packages ON March 10th? Or, are the letters SENT out on March 10th, which would mean admitted applicants will receive them around the 12th?

Also, is it true that these packages are sent by FEDEX? I talked to someone in the AO office, and she said no fedex packages are sent. Why the conflicting info.?

For the past several years, those who are admitted have received a package ON the 10th, unless the
10th was a Sunday. I do not know who the carrier was. Waitlists and denials are usually recieved after the tenth. Those who live close by sometimes receive them on the tenth. All of this leads me to believe that decisions are put in the mail on the ninth. None of this is to say, however, that they will not do things differently this year! Hope this helps.

Are you aware if this holds true in the case of international students as well? Obviously mailing time will be longer.

International students I believe are notified online

I’m currently in 6th grade and well, I have a couple of years but I like to plan things out early and I WOULD LOVE TO GO TO PHILLIPS! Next year I’ll be in 7th grade at a Catholic junior academy with block scheduling and I’ll be in Freshman Honors English and Math. Anybody here attend/ has attended Phillips and have tips? I’m in a small town in Ohio and thinking about making a community garden and donating the vegetables to a food shelter. What do you need to do, activities wise, to get in?

im actually not a student there, but i applied this year.

if i were in your shoes right now, (which i really do right now) preparation is key. i would begin building a large vocab, and ask your teachers for very challenging math material. andover has some of the smartest students and its best if you try to put as much as you can into your brain before learning starts getting a little harder. now im not saying to cram, but get to know the simple concepts very well (such as properties in math) and be able to develop them out to more complex concepts.

you’re so lucky you learned about andover before you entered high school. i wish i would have known about it, which i kinda did, but i never really regarded it as a possibility in my life.

message to you… dont give up on your dreams, especially if you think something is holding you back. ask your parents for advice, and most of all ask your teachers and do lots of research.

my teachers were all pretty negative about andover except for one. she pushed me to do it, i almost stepped out of it, but i didnt. thank god for her.

oh i guess i didnt really answer your question, show commitment somehow in your application. they like that, and so do colleges.

Hey guys! this will be the last time I answer questions before march 10th. I have finals to study for and will NOT use cc as a procrastination tool :D. To build on Shinelikemystar’s advice, show commitment to a certain activity, something that you can build on and have a passion for. Even if it’s the simplest thing, it can be innovated into something amazing. One of my hall-mates loves to scateboard, and founded this video-editing/skateboarding club at school where students make their own ramps/buy them and video themselves doing amazing tricks. The smallest passtimes can really become great extracurriculars that can go a long way.

As for the question on acceptance letters, I received mine on march 10th at around 9:00 am. I live in new england, so it got to me fairly quickly. As for international candidates and west/mid west residents, I’m pretty sure it gets to you on march 10th as well, or that everyone gets the letter in your area at the same time. Ask the admissions office whether or not this is true, they are VERY nice (sometimes give me chocolate lol).

Did Andover send out Usernames/Passwords at some point to check your status online? Our child applied through Gateway To Prep and doesn’t remember receiving any such data.

Did Andover send out Usernames/Passwords at some point to check your status online?

Yes, they did. The subject of the email was something like " My documents -Email’. This is used to check whether you app material is complete. I do not think you can check whether you are accepted or not, except for international students.
