Thanks guys! That helped tons(a ton is 2,000 pounds, boning up on vocab) especially shinelikemystar and swimdude006

What is “dating” like at PA? Do students “hook up” ? Or do students typically have relationships. Are there restrictions on such things?

Mostly just hookups although there are a stellar amount of couples in my grade. It’s not frowned upon to hook up or date, just no sex (against MA state law for anyone under 16). Hookups happen all the time, almost everwhere on the weekend

but isn’t almost half of the student body over 16?

Hi, I was accepted as a new 10th grader this year. Ilove both andover and exeter and was accepted to both. What I love most about exeter is the harkness. How prevalent is the harkness method at andover? Also, how well do new 10th graders fit in? Thank you!

Prowrest- Congrats on your acceptances! Harkness is not incredibly prevalent at Andover. Some english classes use it, but a lot do not. (I’m a 4 year senior and have never had a class that used harkness) However, all of my english classes have been discussion based even if we don’t all sit at a “table”. Instead we just sit in a circle of desks.

Also, I have many good friends who were new 10th graders, they all fit in great and love the school. Andover takes in a pretty large amount of new Lowers, so you definitely wouldn’t be alone.

Thank you! Good to hear

How difficult is it to gain acceptance at PA for 11th grade, will be needing FA.

I don’t know about 11th grade, but I do know that they are extremely good at giving financial aid. They have need blind financial aid, so they do not factor in your need for FA into your acceptance decision. I do not think it is more difficult to get in for 11th grade than any other grade, but someone else might have to answer that part. Just know that you shouldn’t worry about FA interfering with your acceptance.

ptyalejandro,

Gaining admittance as a new Upper, or eleventh grader, to Andover is tough. The best information I have seen is that the admit rate for new Uppers is about 8 percent – some 6 percent lower than the overall 14 percent admit rate at Andover.

This difficulty is explained, in part, by the fact that there are fewer slots open for new Uppers than for other grade matriculants at Andover. If memory serves me correctly, the number of new Uppers (roughly 20) is only about 10% of the total of new ninth graders, (about 200). The number of new tenth graders (approximately 85) and new twelfth graders, (about 30) is also less than the number of new Uppers.

The paucity of admission slots for new Uppers at Andover leads some applicants to repeat tenth grade and thereby enhance their admission chances. Doing so is not uncommon among varsity athletes or for those who want another year at prep school. For many people, this is not a good option because of the added expense and the college delay caused by an additional year of prep school.

Andover and St. Andrews are (I believe) the only boarding schools that offer financial aid on a need blind basis. Andover also meets 100% of demonstrated financial need on a grant only (i.e., no loan) basis. It is not unusual for Andover graduates to discover that Andover offers more generous financial aid than many of the best universities and colleges in America do.

Beginning Andover in eleventh grade presents challenges as well as rewards. You will have less room for academic error than new ninth or tenth graders because your Upper year grades count the most for college admission. You will also experience the rigor of taking more advanced courses as well as the stress of performing well on the SAT and beginning the college selection process. However, these challenges will be more than offset by the academic and extracurricular opportunities Andover will offer you.

Good luck!

My son is a post graduate this coming year at Andover. He is going to be living in the “Fuess House Center” I think on the second floor. I think he will have his own room. Can anyone tell me about that dorm? Do the dorms tend top be noisy? How big are the singles? How does this dorm rate?

Fuess is a great dorm with a great house councilor. Because he’s a PG, he will probably have one of the best rooms in the dorm. The dorm ranges between extreme jocks and quiet introverts. As long as he stays in the right crowd, he should be fine. This is also one of the highly sought after dorms on campus because of it’s seclusion, it’s reputation (more sporty), and it’s house councilor (mr. cuter is one of my favorite faculty members). He should have a good time in fuess!

Is it true that Andover is better for humanities, while Exeter is better for the sciences?
