Also, question:
What is appropriate to wear when you first get to campus on registration day? Would a skirt be too dressy, shorts be too casual? Thanks!

SoontoBoard: Last year I lived in Alumni House, which is right next to Bertha Bailey on the campus side. Every day I got up between 25-30 minutes to the start of my first class. It’s about a ten minute walk to Bulfinch/Gelb and maybe nine to Sam Phil/Morse. It really depends how fast you walk and can get ready for class though. My personal record is seven minutes to Bulfinch, but I know a guy from BB last year who could do BB to Bulfinch in four. For some reason they took down the room information a few weeks ago, I don’t know why. It’s interesting, but not especially useful.

TIGER: YES! FLG represent! I may have moved to Abbot, but I will always live in Flagstaff. You’re ridiculously lucky. Clyfe is the man.

PA*: It really doesn’t matter what you wear. I’d advise wearing something comfortable though, because you’ll have to carry all your stuff to your room.

PA*: I’d go with the shorts if it is a hot day. You have to carry all your stuff to your room, and in the afternoon you will begin new student orientation activities, including playing name games and learning the Andover cheers and stuff. Some of that time will be spent sitting in the grass on the Great Lawn.

4 minutes from Bertha Bailey to Bulfinch? That kid must have been on the track team because that’s probably a 1/2 mile walk uphill (the first 200 yards or so) with backpack and a wait for the crossing light on Main Street.

Soontoboard: I PM’ed you the location of Bertha Bailey so you can see its location/picture on Google Maps. I won’t post it here because Andover intentionally doesn’t list the names and locations of dormitories on its online maps - presumably for security reasons.

Uroogla, how long dose it take someone like YOU to walk from Rockwell to the Commons or most classes?

It’s not a long walk (no more than about 5-10 minutes) for an average individual. As Tapper7 noted, even the more distant dorms are generally no more than 10 minutes from the academic buildings. I was just remarking on the feat of getting to Bulfinch from the far reaches of Abbot in 4 minutes - that’s impressive.

If you still have your Andover view book (I do… haha), there is a map in there that includes all the dorms!

I pretty sure he wasn’t on the track team, I think he was just often late. After awhile he worked out a system (complete with tightening backpack straps so it wouldn’t bounce). And I believe the four minutes was a one time record when he happened to hit the light at the right time. But I think he was averaging about five/six minutes. I’d regularly see him sprinting by me up Main Street. For most people walking at a normal pace, I’d say it’s about nine-ten minutes from the farther Abbot dorms to most academic buildings (excluding Elson and Graves).

Rockwell to Commons…it depends on how lucky you can get with the lights. Right now, it seems you either get them immediately (or jaywalk), or you’re stuck at the light for 5 minutes. So it could be anywhere from 5 to 10 minutes, probably closer to 5. Carriage to Hearsay House, though…that would be interesting to time. I think I’ve jogged from Carriage to GELB in a little over 10 before, and Hearsay is a few minutes further.

Do you happen to know Rockwell’s house couselors, Mr. Hession and Mr. Levion?

I had Mr. Hession for history. He’s nice, though I have no idea about how strict he is. He’s a history teacher.

Tapper7: Yeeeuhhh Flagstaff!!. What dorm were u in and what are cluster meetings like. Im a new lower and im going to be in Bartlet

Soooo, people who went/go there…I am yet another person who is curious to know about her dorm. Any info you can give me on Alumni? I got a single!!! Are the rooms “nice”?
What’s Ms. Milkowski like?

TIGER: I lived in Paul Revere, which, coincidentally, is the best dorm on campus. Cluster meetings aren’t terribly exciting, they’re usually just for giving out announcements. Sometimes there are student performers for a few minutes at the beginning, which is cool. On the plus side, Clyfe tries to cut down the meetings as much as possible, so FLG is usually one of the first clusters out. Never underestimate the usefulness of being one of the first clusters in line at lunch on Wednesdays.

TiaB: I lived in Alumni last year and I really liked it. The rooms aren’t massive, but they aren’t miniscule either. Unfortunately, I can’t show you what the singles look like since it seems I have pictures of just about the whole dorm but a standard single. On the plus side, Alumni has a great common room for its size. Last year, the girls were really close-knit so most of them hung out there and only really used their rooms for studying and sleeping.

I know nothing about the house counselor since ours left at the end of last year. One of the complimentary HCs has also changed, but Tous should still be there. Ms. Tousignant can be a bit strict about the rules, but she’s awesome to chat with about anything from class selection to current events to random school happenings. She’ll be especially good to go to with academic questions since my guess is that Ms. Milkowski is a new teacher.

Great. Thanks! You made me kinda jealous of the FLG people but I’m already starting to understand the concept of “cluster pride”. Go Abbott!!!

As for the dorms…I hear that people tend to be happy no matter where they go. That’s the beauty of it.

Yeah! Abbott all the way! Woot! :)

Haha! I’m meeting a fellow Abbot student! Woot indeed. I guess I’ll be seeing you at cluster meetings!

Sorry about that. From what I’ve seen people tend to be especially tied to their first dorm and cluster. I know rising uppers and seniors all over campus who still love their cluster from freshmen year. As one of my friends put it, “Rep your current cluster, love your first.”

Haha interesting. Tapper7 is the cluster meetings every wednesday then? and do we have a cluster meeting on the first week of school or do they start from the 2nd week.

There is a cluster meeting once a term, on Wednesday instead of ASM. In addition, there’s the beginning of year meeting which is at night before the term begins.
