<p>I believe it’s a marketing strategy, but they do go out their way and look for kids with good performance in contests (e.g. AMC), scholarship application pools, etc… They do send out many invitations. If you have received one, it means you have done something “right”, but there is no garantee you will be admitted.</p>
<p>Invitations aren’t common but not out of he ordinary.</p>

<p>konikamano, really? i actually didn’t notice the map until my interviewer told me to put a pin on it! (i know, my observation skills = fail, haha) maybe different interviewers just have different preferences about the map?</p>
<p>the map’s just to show how many people applying from each state/country. they probably bring in a new map every week or something because it’d get WAYY crowded if the same one was there the whole application season. although i’m a bit scared since new jersey had the most applicants when i put up the pin, and i’m from new jersey. D:</p>
