I have been accepted to William & Mary and the University of Virginia. I plan to major in philosophy and intend to pursue either a masters in architecture, with an emphasis on theory, or a PhD in philosophy. Does anyone know which school has a better philosophy department and/or would present a better opportunity of being accepted into a strong graduate program?

I know that UVa has a very high caliber Honors Philosophy program which accepts around 3 students every year. It’s based on the tutorial system at Cambridge where you’re guided and mentored by a philosophy faculty member and you don’t really take regular classes anymore. If it’s anything like the Honors Politics program here, then it will certainly set you up for graduate school. I would look into it and maybe email a professor at UVa if you are truly interested.

I would look to see whether UVa has any 5 year joint masters-bachelors programs in any fields you are interested in. That could save much time and money.

Ummm… we have professor Trenton Merricks–the best philosophy professor ever. He specializes in metaphysics, and is quite an entertaining/engaging lecturer. Oh, and Philosophy of Religion = One of the best classes at UVA.

So, what I’m trying to say is that you should attend UVA.

UVA is better. Stronger program and more research opportunities.

<----doesn’t go to UVA.

Mooreen - This thread is from April. The OP has made a decision and is getting ready to start classes at one of the finest schools in the country, be it UVa or W&M.
