will we get some kind of time window for the calls home on Sunday?

you should- usually they post a general window of time...but allow 45 minutes before and after the posted window just to be safe (I think I expanded that to 1 hour on either side last year)....

if you have not already joined the usna parent website, do so.... much of this information will be posted there by the moderators that get the inside scoop on things....

just make sure to tell everyone ELSE you know NOT TO CALL you on Sunday lest you miss the one call that really matters! ;)

That is exactly what I was wondering? Any ideas?

^^^^ post the question on the plebe parent listserve..... the moderators will post the schedule as soon as they get it....

I don't remember, but seems to me we may have even gotten a letter sent home with the "schedule"????? (perhaps profmom can chime in..... she has a much metter memory than I do for these things! )

By this point in plebe summer for the Great Class of 2009, families had received a letter from the commandant with a phone schedule for each battalion. Most parents said their phone calls were five minutes or less. Last year I understand some plebes had up to 45 minute conversations during some of their calls. Things change.

^^^^ not so sure they changed that much....
seems our first "offical" call to home was 3 minutes 58 seconds.... EXACT.... with the cadre "counting down" the final 10 seconds in the background!

(the 45 minutes afforded to one company was "earned".... sadly, not by Oscar!! )

I think I might just take the whole day off from work. I am not going to miss this call. Boss says I can't keep cell phone on " ...to busy". I can't think of a better reason to stay home.

LOL!!!! Now you've got it!

Welcome to the Navy....where "hurry up and wait" is the rule of the day!

enjoy your call- AND your day off!! Bet it will be one of the best "mental health" days you ever have! :)

I think the info we Plebe Moms are looking for is TIME OF DAY.. We know the dates. There was NOT a time of day in the letter. What TIME OF DAY did they call past years? THANKS! :)

On a slightly related note, and just out of curiosity, what did the old telephone rooms get converted to, assuming they were converted at all?

Like a moron, it didn't occur to me to look for myself last month when I was in the Hall.

If I remember from last year, the calls were Sunday evening around 5:00PM..give or take an hour....

My son was in the lucky Company that got 40 minutes for each call. We were blessed. I just hope that my Plebe daughter is as blessed this year!

we got our calls around 1 or 2 three years ago. You could always give the Chaplain's Office to see if they have the scoop...they seem to be the go-to-people!

I believe the calls came in last year between 3pm and 5:45 pm....

Z...telephone rooms? don't recall seeing any of those in the company areas....then again, would not know what to look for....
I know there are several old telephone booths located outside Drydock....

the phone schedule in the dant's letter included a "time window" for each battalion.

Back in the old days where cellular phones had to be vehicle-mounted or came with a small suitcase for a battery, USNA was sprinkled with phone rooms where the Mids would make their calls (unless they were lucky enough to be battalion stripers or above, in which case they had a phone in their room).

Phone rooms were just that: a room measuring anywhere from 10x20 to 15x30 filled with 12-25 individual phone booths with payphones, doors, and small seats. I remember one being located on 4-1 and another on 8-0. These were mirrored in 5-1 and 7-0, among others.

At any rate, it was a common sight to see a line outside these rooms, with upperclassmen always cutting in front of Plebes. Since it seems that Mids either have cell phones or phones in their rooms, I assume these phone rooms became wasted space and I was wondering what, if anything, had been done with them during the renovations.

One of the "standard" Plebe Summer photographs for my class is of a line of Plebes waiting to get into the phone room on Sunday morning. All are studying their Reef Points, of course. I am one of the little devils in line. Not a flattering photo, to be sure! Back then we were free on Sundays from after breakfast to noon meal formation to attend divine services, call home, or simply relax in our rooms. Apparently, that has changed, too.

could it be that the phone rooms were changed into what are now the company wardrooms.... or were the wardrooms always there?

No doubt cell phones- in addition to the internet (IM's, emails and even web cams) have changed the entire plebe- and academy- experience! (no doubt these additional distractions bring along with them their own set of challenges!)

Each company had a wardroom and a refrigerator room. The latter housed a fridge as well as a coffee pot, microwave, sink, etc.

During the renovations, many RR's and wardrooms got moved. I know for a fact the ones on 1-4 are no longer where they were.

What is upstairs Bancroft in the rooms with alcove type windows, I believe on the 5th floor... looked like Penthouses! :) although I am sure not.. just curious as we did see people looking out during Oath and I thought there were only 4 floors of dorms.

And still wondering if some upperclassman parents can tell us when the past years' phone calls came in.. Morning, Evening? THANKS!

^^^ can't help you with the rooms, but the calls came in the late afternoon/early evening (3p-5:45p range).

This just in from the list-serv. Plebe phone times according to the POD is 1600-1645. Some companies could have another activity scheduled or have duty so the time could vary. Here's hoping for positive calls for all
