What is upstairs Bancroft in the rooms with alcove type windows, I believe on the 5th floor... looked like Penthouses! although I am sure not.. just curious as we did see people looking out during Oath and I thought there were only 4 floors of dorms....

Bancroft Hall has five decks plus a basement. Those "alcove type windows" are called dormers. There are no penthouses in Bancroft Hall ... just dorm rooms.

There used to be some very impressive rooms where only three Mids lived, but apparently those were all redone during the renovation.

I lived up in those dormers for three years. The best thing about those rooms was that the slant of the roof guaranteed that you only had two Mids in those rooms.

My room 1/C year overlooked T-Court. 2/C year I overlooked the Yard. 3/C year I overlooked the Severn. Yes, it's a hell of a climb, but well worth the view and the breezes (remember, this was back before the hall was A/C'd).

If it hasn't been suggested already, get a digital recorder [one you can plug into the phone; if you try to just hold it up to a wireless phone, you will get a buzz]. record the conversation. After initial listening and attempts at deciphering every inflection, you then can listen to the group of them and see how the crackle in your mid's voice that was present in the first call disappears, their voice gets stronger, and, eventually, the call is full of confidence.
worth the investment.

I seem to remember my son calling every Sunday morning, not every other one as now scheduled. Also they were in the morning and were substantially longer than three minutes.

Trap # 1: They will describe some completely unbearable situation that is driving them crazy and maybe even make them contemplate quitting. You will spend the following week totally immersed in this problem and by the next phone call, you are totally prepared to impart your words of wisdom. Toward the end of the ensuing phone call, when they have failed to mention the situation that was so important the previous conversation, you will casually bring it up. They will not know what you are talking about.

Plebe summer is an emotional roller coaster ride with rides inside of rides. Just get on and go with the flow.

LOL! You are so right. I can't tell you how many times we went through that! Glad we have the opportunity to look back and laugh, because it sure wasn't entertaining at the time! ;)

Our son has lived on the 5th deck for his entire tenure. This year they had a 6 man, which was two three man rooms connected by a hallway area. They procured an extra table to put in the hallway which gave them an additional area for work, which was good, however, they soon realized that the added floorspace was quite the liability when it was time for cleaning. Evidently this was on the end of the wing, which also gave them wrap-around windows and beaucoup opportunities for observing the courtyard below and the target rich environment.

Just got a 2 min call from Lola! She is GREAT!! So good to hear her voice! Sounded so mature.

Not to jinx it, but I asked her if she liked it and she said "Mom, Plebe Summer is not something you like but it is a lot less than I expected."

The phone call was completely differnt from what I expected. He had a little pep in his voice and talked about how awesome the 4th of July celebration was. Hopefully , he is starting to get over the homesickness. He mentioned that something happened within his company but he was not involved. He said he explained it in a letter but didn't want to waste time with it today. I wonder what could have happened? That is like the ending of The Sopranos... I want to know what happened. Well, glad that he sounded better and he asked for food. He said he didn't get to eat lunch today. So much for The Navy making sure he gets 3 a day. No wonder these kids lose so much weight if they are not allowed to eat. I'm sure the Mids or Alums on here will spin it accordingly

There was an incident that involved a plebe being transported to a hospital. I will not describe the incident or even go into the details...however, everything is being worked out and the plebe should be okay.

Please don't ask for details, I will not answer them.

There is nothing to spin. For a Mid to be DENIED a meal is almost unheard of. I would like to know the conditions under which he didn't get lunch before any judgment is made.

I spent four years at USNA, and not once was I ever denied a meal. Plebes lose weight during Plebe Summer (I lost 51 pounds) because of the activity level, not because they don't get to eat.

That is odd too, the only thing prior to noon meal formation on Sunday is morning services...so it doesn't seem as though there was a logistical/operational problem.

Blackhawk....it occured to me that there were two incidents. One more grave than the other....what plebe summer company is your son in (if you don't mind sharing...this will stay completely on the msg board...or you can send me a pm)?

I would not think that noon meal and formation is voluntary. There is some reason that this happened. My Son said he saw a kid shatter his arm. Didn't say how or when. Injuries occur I'm sure . I hope the kid that was transported to the hospital is ok

If your not going to provide any details, then why even mention it.
The story is that a plebe tried to injure himself [herself?] a few nights ago; perhaps even an attempt to commit suicide.
Why the big secrecy?

Becuase it is not my place to mention the details. If the Academy wants to, then they will. I was just informing the parents that a serious incident had occured, in response to what a plebe mentioned today. Also, I didn't want to make a big hoopla about it. Some parents might start worrying about a lot of things...such as the training.

Lola told me there is a whole group of them on SWIM PEP For Leg/Foot injuries (she is included in that group) and there are people in and out of the hospital every day for a variety of injuries/dehydration.

Nursey! Lola was in the clinic the day Killer came in and was worried about him. She also knew he had recovered :)

BLACKHAWK! SOOOOO HAPPY YOUR SON IS MORE UPBEAT!! :)

Thanks , You never know how these emotions work. I'm sure it is a day by day thing. Sorry to hear that Lola was injured. I hope nothing serious. it sounds like she is doing well though.

Jadler - I am with dadvet on this one, it is NOT your place to even bring this up. The Academy will let the individuals conserned know what occured. In the mean time all you are doing is generating needless worry and fear on the part of those of us with a son or daughter going through Plebe Summer. Unless you are one of the officials who is supposed to notify us of these types of thing, please stay quiet. If you are an official who is supposed to notify peple of these issues, this is NOT the forum to do so.
