Do you have to pay to use the phone hook up in the dorms?

Yes. I was not able to find a reference to it on the Tulane site quickly, but I am virtually certain that if you want a land line you have to pay extra. Virtually everyone just has mobile phones, I believe.

The “Arrive” link on the housing page has a “what to bring” list and a phone was one of the things on the list - it says one jack per room - I assumed that meant the phone service is provided. If there was a charge, I would have thought it would have been offered somewhere, like dorm fridge etc…

You might be right, although I could swear I read last year that there was a charge. But I just asked my D and she thinks you can just plug it in. That was quickly followed with “but I am really not sure because no one had a land line”. Maybe what I read was that long distance calls or whatever are charged to the room.

D looked at me like I was suggesting she might bring a buggy whip when I asked if she wanted to bring a corded phone. Honestly, we never even use the one at home anymore and D hasn’t had one in her bedroom in years. It got taken out during a room reno and D never even bothered plugging it back in.

…In nyc, after 9/11, the cell phone networks died but my landline was working fine. Given the weather situation in NOLA, and the possibility of evacuation, I would like my cell addicted daughter to plug in the old princess phone we threw in a Fed Ex box. Just in case. And provided, of course, that there are no monthly charges.

OK, I just called housing. They said there is no charge for local calls, but there are for long distance. Post #4 is correct.
