Phone reception?

What carrier seems to work the best on campus? Off campus? In classrooms? I have tmobile right now and reception isnt very good to say the least.

Virgin mobile is cheapest (among ppl I know)
At&t and Verizon are arguably reliable (not the basements)

I’ve heard Verizon is the most reliable for the Cornell campus. My S has Virgin Mobile and it’s cheap but he needs a new phone anyhow, so thinking of switching to Verizon at this point.

My daughter, who just graduated, had no trouble with a Verizon cell phone, either on or off campus.

I recentlyl posted to another thread about cell service around campus - Sprint, which has the $69.95 unlimited plan has very spotty reception on North Campus. Reception is good pretty much every where else in Ithaca though. D lived in Bauer and the phone was on constant roam in her room. I had some very intense discussions with Sprint as to what unlimited means (they thought 800 minutes on roam) but finally got the issue resolved. According to D, Verizon has best service in that area of campus (but I think she just wants an I phone). Virgin, if I am not mistaken, bounces off Sprint towers, so reception on North may be spotty with that phone as well.

Verizon is indeed the best on campus (works at the basement of some buildings!). AT&T is the second best.

From what Ive read Verizon is hands down the best, how far off is AT&T? Or Sprint?

I don’t know about Sprint, but AT&T is (very) usable. It’s not that bad, but certainly is not as good as Verizon.

Verizon and AT&T are really the only ones that work well in Ithaca. I have Verizon, but a lot of my friends have AT&T and it works just as well.

I’d like to post a follow up to my earlier Sprint comments.

The problems I had with Sprint was that their “unlimited” plan is only supposed to include 800 roaming minutes. My D lived in Bauer last year on North Campus. When she called from her room, she was on roaming (although reception everywhere else but North was fine). In November, I got a letter from Sprint saying that she exceeded her roaming minutes and if she continued to do so, she would be dropped from Sprint. I called Sprint in a panic and explained to them that I was told when I purchased the phone that she would have good reception in Ithaca, and surely they didn’t expect a young lady to walk all over campus at night looking for phone reception. They said “no problem”. In December, we got another letter. I emailed Sprint. Again, the response was “no problem, ignore that letter”. Last month I got a letter from Sprint saying that D was being dropped because of excessive roaming.

Last week got an I Phone and Verizon plan for D.

Sprint customer service sucks.

We finally dropped Sprint last summer. We live in the same town where their world HQ are located and we couldn’t get reception just a few blocks away from it. My sister worked on their campus for awhile and she said that many people couldn’t get reception on certain parts of the Sprint Campus. Very inspiring. We switched to ATT and have had no problems and my son who goes to college in NYC has no problems either.

My sons never had a problem on or off campus with Verizon.

Verizon is generally considered to be the best, but AT&T seems to work well too. I would stay away from T-Mobile - their service is awful on campus

Does anyone know if Verizon 3G service is available on campus?

Third world problems, I know.

Yes, it’s available.
