Phone

Should I have a dorm room phone in addition to my cell phone? Apparently, my dorm room will have a phone line available. In order to use this dorm room line, I will have to purchase a phone.

I've always had a phone in my dorm room, but I'm one of the only people on my hall who does. A cheap remote phone (make sure you get the 900 megahertz rather than one of the more expensive ones that aren't allowed) costs like ten dollars, and I've used the same one all three years of college (plus two summers). The phone line comes with free caller id and voice mail, so that's nice. And it's nice to be able to call campus extensions (registrar, student health, etc) without using cell phone minutes.

Many food delivery places want a local number phone. So, our wing always used someone's dorm phone.

You'll always have someone who will have one on your floor.

I personally think it's a waste. I personally would have never used it, but it depends on you personally if you think you will. It's not necessary by any means.

My son never used the one he took freshman year, so brought it back home at end of first semester. I do think it would be nice to dial campus extensions, but it never seemed to bother him.

i've always found that a much easier way to dial on-campus numbers is to program them into a cell phone... the phone i bought for my room freshman year was pretty much obsolete.
