in the midwest.....how about a photo summer program....??

thanks

I would imagine that schools with strong photojournalism would be:

Syracuse University

RIT

One school that has strictly Photo major (not a concentration in art) is Virginia Intermont College in Bristol,VA. It's a very small school known for its more unusual majors. Largest major is equine science, the second largest I believe is photo. Culinary, paralegal, and dance are some of the others. My D. went there because she too did not want to draw or paint or study lots of art technique/history. She double majored in photo/ equine. School lacks things of a larger school such as football, but the population is very diverse and she has made good friends there from all other the US, England, Scotland, Dominican Republic to name a few. I believe there is another school in Richmond VA that also has a photo major and possibly the Savannah School of the Arts.

You might want to look at The School of Visual Arts in New York and RIT Both have strong photojournalism depts. Your son could submit a photo portfolio for both schools. You might also look at Columbia College in Chicago. The photo dept. is developing a strong reputation.

My d goes to RIT (she's a graphic design major). I don't think a portfolio is needed for photo majors. RIT does offer a photojournalism BFA. From what I see, the photojournalism major only takes one qtr of drawing and 2 qtr of 2D. My d was sort of in the same situation because she only decided junior yr she might be interested in art (after taking some drafting & computer based graphic communications/advertising art classes). She was definitely lacking in studio art (but did have 4 yrs of language, tons of lab science and math through calculus haha). She only had one basic art class freshman yr and another intro to studio senior yr (that she had to beg to get into - she didn't have the drawing and painting prerequisite classes. She also took a drawing class (out of fear) at a county college which was very basic. And she had to come up with a portfolio!

She has found RIT to be very demanding and most of the kids have LOTS of art experience/training BUT she has made up for it by working hard (and she's a perfectionist). She found that some of the more talented kids rush through (thinking they know everything or don't care if it's their best work) and get worse grade than she does. She works really hard, putting in lots of hours, but has received As and has had some of her work showcased (mostly 3D). She has found drawing to be the hardest class, especially figure drawing. Graphic Design majors have to take lots of drawing, 2D and 3D (unlike photo majors).

So, if your child is really interested in doing photo, don't let his lack of studio art hold him back. Maybe try a CC class or summer program to get him started.

Try this link to read more about RIT's curriculum (page 15 for photojournalism).

back to page one of this thread when you were talking about summer programs. Interlochen Center for the Arts has an amazing summer program for the visual arts and an excellent high school program.

just to share with you. also, thank you for your threads that are informative and thought provoking...

p.s. their photography, theatre, dance, film and music both instrumental and vocal are also really amazing programs with
great teachers.

ditto about Interlochen. A number of their high school students win gold medals at Scholastic. I am very impressed with their program!

The National Press Photographers Assn. provides a list of photojournalism programs here: http://www.nppa.org/professional_development/students/schools_and_colleges/schools.html

Finnegan, what year is he? What Midwest States are you most interested in for him?
