I was considering this to be my minor. Any thoughts or information regarding photography? Will it be useful or can I really get into a career doing photography? Any downfalls of being a photographer?

hmm... i think it really depends on how ambitious you are. photographers can get a job, though I bet the pay isn't so high. I guess the downfall is that you will probably freelance.

Hey I had a lot of the same questions as you these past few years, and I have some answers that may be of some help. I am currently a senior in high school heading off to college in the fall with the intent of minoring in photography wherever I end up.
This is what I have gathered:
Only make photography your career if it is your true passion in life. If it is, definitely go for it as a career. You will be happy and that will be enough to make it worthwhile.
Photography does not pay much money for most and it is competitive. Most photographers work out of a studio and may do commercial shots (for advertising, etc), weddings, portraits, etc. If you are amazingly good, you can charge a fair amount of money. Wedding photographers can make a $1000 in a day!
My problem with photography is there is nothing really to aspire to once you are making a good amount of money. Sure at a paper you can get promoted from photographer to photography editor, but really after that you are stuck. There isn't much opportunity for promotion.
Still, some jobs sounds amazing. How cool would it be to work for National Geographic and travel the world taking photographs of other cultures? I would go for that if i was good enough :)
PM me if you have any other questions or would like me to relay some names of pro photographers I have come into contact with. I actually do a lot of freelancing through a website I operate so I've had a little taste of what it is like to have it as a career.

Great info! thank you so much. that did answer a lot of my questions in mind. but my major is civil engineering and i wanted to take up a photography job during the summer by interning or of some sort. but now i'm having doubts and i should just intern for a firm dealing with civil engineering. haha. if i have anymore questions, i'll be sure to pm you. thank you
