Phy2061

Does anyone know how hard Physics 2 Honors (with Amlan Biswas) is? any feedback is appreciated.

Did you take Enriched Physics 1? How are you doing in whichever Physics 1 class you are taking? What is your major? Why do you want to take it?

I am in Enriched Physics 1, i got an A on the first exam, and the highest score in the class on the second exam, so i am doing very well. however electricity and magnetism aren’t my forte. I am going to be an Electrical Engineer so I need to really get the basics down, which is why i chose physics honors 2, because if i can get basic E fields and circuits down now, i will help myself a TON in the future. Agree?

Thats why i wanna know how tough this course is :)

So you want the tougher course? PHY 2061 is definitely the more educational course. Biswas is a fair teacher, and he’s been teaching that class for a while. Since you are doing well in Enriched 1, you probably have the mathematical ability to succeed in Enriched 2 although the professors you have now are not known for their difficulty.

You will definitely cover E fields and circuits in more detail than Physics 2, and you may even get some bonus lectures on complex analysis with circuits. Enjoy!

Would you say that it would be reasonable to hope for an A in the class? And could you comment on the grading scale/how hard Biswas is as a professor? I am taking the course because I really want to get the basics down for later classes in electrical engineering. I know that PHY2049 is by far an easier class to get an A in, but if I can get an A in this course while still learning much more, I would rather do that.

D didn’t have Biswas when she took H2061 her freshman year (she’s a 3rd year now). But she didn’t have any difficulty with the class; she got an A. Her roommate was taking 2049, and they did notice that D’s class was more difficult. D got an A in H2060 with Furic, too. D is stronger than her roommate in physics, but her roommate is stronger than D in chemistry. They are both ChemE majors. D, however, did not take the lab as she had AP’d out of the comparable lab and didn’t feel the need to retake it for her major.

zebes

I think zebes is subliminally saying that you will get a D if you take 2061 :D.

Biswas’ class is definitely doable. No curve, but >85 is “some” kind of A. Test averages are expected to be around 32-34 /40 and he only gives group quizzes (everyone shares answers, open book and notes). Another perk is that he gives coffee every lecture since it’s so early in the morning.

I would take Biswas for as low as a B+ since he’s a great teacher, and the class is definitely more in depth, interesting, and fun.

Thanks for the opinions guys. I didn’t think I would do that well in PHY2060 at first, but honestly if you work your a** off then you can get an A in any class. Which is what I did in 2060 haha. I hear Biswas is a great teacher, I am just kind of stuck at whether or not its worth the grade impact to learn more. In today’s society, everything depends on the GPA, no matter what anyone else says

From everything you’ve posted take the 2061 unless you think your other classes will be much tougher this semester than they were last semester. Or perhaps if you’re adding something else time consuming this semester like a part time job or a bunch of ECs.

Haha my schedule is looking like this:

PHY2061
MAP2302 (Diffy Q)
EEL3701 (Digital Logic -_______-)
PHY2064L (Accelerated Physics Lab)

Seem manageable?

You’re going to hate the lab, but the schedule definitely looks doable. What was your schedule this semester?

Professional Communication
Calc 3
Enriched Physics
Intro to Electrical Engineering
Sociology

It will definitely be a harder schedule next semester, but I feel that I will be able to pull it off. I am a very hard worker and willing to sacrifice social time.

Which lab am I going to hate? The Digital Logic lab, or the PHY2064 Lab?

I didn’t know Digital Logic was a lab (or combination of lecture and lab), so PHY2064. It takes all day long although I heard it was a somewhat guaranteed A.

Yeah, based on your current schedule you should be able to handle it. It’s good that you’re taking Calc 3 right now since trying to learn Calc 3 during 2061 and 2 during 2060 is just not helpful.

Alright man, thanks for all the advice, I appreciate it!
