Hi im a premec student at rice taking phys 101 starting in 2 weeks. i was wondering why it's only worth 3 credit hrs though despite there being a lab portion. And also since im a premed i need 8 hrs of physics in total. So at the end of the year i would have 7 hrs of physics (phys 102 is 4 credit hrs). Could someone explain the situation to me thanks!

Take Phys 125 General Physics with lab. It’s 4 credits and is what pre-meds take (for the most part).

^^ Agreed. Take Phys 125/126.

Physics 125/126 are terrible courses from what I’ve heard, though. Why don’t you wait and talk to the pre-med advisor?

Well, I’m a bioengineering major, so I sort of need the phys 101/102 credits. Are pre-meds simply EXPECTED to take 125/126?

BioE’s are allowed to take 125/126. Atleast they were a few years ago. I’m not sure if anything has changes since

Oh i was told that as long as there’s a lab component, I’ll be good to go; the number isn’t that important!

I was told premeds can take phys 101/102 and still fulfill the premed requirements. Also, phys 125/126 are absolutely dreadful and packed full of pre-meds. The class is a joke… you get packaged online WebAssign homework which you have to subscribe (pay extra) to see. Take phys 101/102. The experience is far better.

I’m an incoming pre-med freshman too, but I’m not doing engineering. I’m taking 14 hours (keeping it light first semester), and am enrolled in Phys 125/126. I’ve heard a LOTof scary things about this class though, and physics has always been my worst subject. If I don’t do well in this course, should i take physics again at another college where I’m likely to get a better grade (ie UH)? I’m stuck with 125 for this fall sem, but should I not take 126 in the spring? Is 102 > 126? Advice would be much appreciated!
