Could any upperclassmen here please share some info about this class? Is there anything I can do over break to prepare for it? Is it hard to get an A in the class? I have Professor Dave Winn.

I'm worried because I tested out of physics 140/141, but didn't do so hot on the E&M AP exam, and I'm wondering if not having taken 140 will put me at a disadvantage. Thanks for the help!

First of all, Winn is one of the best professors in Physics to learn from and I had him for both 140 and 240.

Physics 240 was a difficult and confusing class but not an impossible one. I don’t think taking 140 will give a huge advantage in terms of subject matter to a student. There isn’t a huge need to study before hand over break but I do recommend joining a study group (whether through the SLC or not) to have continual exposure to the subject matter. The more exposure you get, the better you’ll do. Also, use the resources provided by the physics department including office hours and tutors whenever you need help.

Edit: Also about the textbook, even if you buy it used, you’ll need an online code to use the mastering physics program for homeworks. The homeworks are semi-difficult but if you get help and take the time to learn, they’re not challenging. Also, you get a lot of ‘attempts’.

For physics 241, you really only need to read the lab manual beforehand and understand the main concepts of the week before doing the lab. Its not too difficult either, but can get quite annoying. I was annoyed with lab because they didn’t curve and my quizzes were quite impossible.

For reference, I think I got an A in 240 and A- in 241.
