So I really want to major in physics. My physics teacher believes that I can do it and will even write me a letter of recommendation. However, on my ACT science portion I did really bad (22). On the other hand, I got a 790 on my SAT Subject test for physics. Will colleges overlook the fact that I received such a low score on the ACT?

The ACT science section is about critical reading and analysis, not actual knowledge of science. So I doubt that it would impact someone’s acceptance of a particular major. Now, a 790 on your SAT subject test for physics is amazing!!! THAT is what they would look at… I am assuming that your overall composite ACT score is within the range for the schools you are considering, despite the low science part?

Yes, I scored a 30 and above on all sections. Science was the only one weighing me down.

It will depend on the university. At my school, Illinois Tech, we have found that the primary indicator of success in physics and engineering is the Math score on the ACT or SAT.
