Where do you go to practice on the piano in college? I'm not a piano or music major. In fact, I'm a biochemistry major. So I doubt I have access to those music wings. Are there private piano rooms in the dorms or whatever? I still want to keep up with my piano techniques and to not waste those 5 years of piano money.

Also for those not majoring in music, do you guys even have time to play your instruments (whether as a hobby, for skills building, for self improvement, etc)?

Depends on the school. You may find an all Steinway school, with pianos accessible to all.

You may find pianos in all the dorms, the commons in numerous spots. Some will be playable, others won’t be. You may be hard pressed finding a piano or access period.

Policies as to use will be institution specific, and are typically detailed in the music department’s webpages. As a non-music student, you may or may not have access to the practice rooms. In some cases, you can stretch the envelope and try and get access. Try talking with and demonstrating your talent to the dept or discipline chair.

You may want to consider continuing lessons to maintain or strengthen your skills. Again, the policies vary widely, but as a music minor you may also get free or low cost lessons with faculty or grad students, and practice room access that may normally be closed to the general population.

At my school, Beloit, we have an entire floor full of music labs that each have a piano in them for general student use.

At my old college, there were private piano rooms where each room had its own piano for a student to practice in. There were about thirty or so of these.
There were also pianos in the common areas of each dorm.

Check on their website, that’s something they might mention.

It depends on the school. I think a lot of schools have piano access in the dorms because they assume that a lot of people play even if they dont major or anything.
