Pick any genre for audition solo...

So, this is what two colleges where my daughter is applying say regarding their auditions, but I'm curious if they really mean it. My daughter's favorite style of dance is belly dance (specifically American Tribal Style) and this is what she plans on doing her solos in. The schools she's applying to are not super-serious competitive conservatory type schools. But I'm still wondering if a belly dance solo will be a little too out of the mainstream. If she doesn't do belly dance, she will probably do modern. Thanks for any advice!

Hi. What schools is she applying to? We did the tour of UArts and they said that a girl who did Flamenco dance made it because it was different and they knew the girl could move. Now I will say that if this is the only type of dance she does then it would be pretty tough to make it. You do have to have good Ballet skills as well as jazz or modern. But I think the more she can stick out the better. Good Luck!

Do the schools offer belly dance? If not, they may think your daughter is looking for something they can’t provide. Although, as dancerinpa says, it would make her stand out. I assume that she will also be participating in group auditions for ballet and modern, so by the time she gets to her solo, they’ll know she can do that. It might work.

Thanks for your input! She is applying at schools that have a modern focus with world dance as well. The two schools that say your solo can be any genre are CU-Boulder and Goucher College. I don’t believe either one offers belly dance.

Ballet is her weakest area, having taken a several-year break (and back at it for two years now), but she is strong in modern (at least for the level of schools she’s looking at) and fairly strong in jazz.

Goucher has group classes in ballet and modern. CU has group classes in modern and “mixed dance styles” (which I’m assuming will include their focus areas of African, jazz, and hip hop). So they will see her ability in their styles.

I think it sounds like the belly dance could be an advantage. It is her strongest area and it sounds like dance teachers can appreciate “different.”

Thanks again for your help!
