Picking a Major

How permanent is your choice of major you put down on your college applications? I want to do some sort of engineering right now and I'm leaning toward mechanical, but if I get accepted and then sometime down the road change my mind, can I change the major? Just curious.

bump........

bump...........

bump again

bump and a bump and another bumpy bumpy bump

bump...........

awwwww.. i can't believe no one's answered you question... but I will!

Most colleges will not have you declaring a major until near the END of your SOPHOMORE year!!

I'm sure someone else on this message board can answer as to why they do have you specify your interest on the application... but I assume they just want to know where your interests lie.... just as they want to know what your ECs are, etc.

Don't worry, it won't be a committment! :-)

yes you may and it's a commong hting to do.

OK cool, thanks for the responses. I kind of figured that was the case, but I just wanted to be sure. Now I can finish up my apps (yay).

Some (i.e. big publics) you enter into the major, but most you either choose the school (like arts and sciences or engineering) but don't declare a major until later, or they don't have the schools at all :) Though, if you plan on engineering, or anything else with a high number of requirements, you really need to know before you get there or very quickly once you're there

if your going into engineering, declare. Switching into engineering even as late as the end of freshman year can mean an extra semester of college

I am almost certain that I will major in engineering, but I just haven't decided on what type yet. I'm basically choosing between mechanical, chemical, and electrical. So that's fine right? I'm putting mechanical as my first choice for now but I just wanted to know if it's OK to change that to a different field of engineering later.

It's fine to be undecided about the kind of engineering (chances are you'll take a "survey" type class anyways and there's usually a core that doesn't change much)
