Picking a test.

So basically I live in New York City and the SAT is like the only test that 80% of people have heard of. I've taken the PSAT thrice and I hate its guts so much that I want the College Board to die (even though I'll be taking three Subject Tests <3) and the ACT is just so awesome.

I feel obligated as an east coaster to take the SAT. So many people tell me that no colleges take the ACT seriously or accept it or that most colleges that get 99% SAT scores even though this must be false (though the SAT really seems to be the majority for every school I like).

So what does one do?

Take the ACT if you prefer it. Schools just convert between the two using standardized tables anyhow, so there’s no advantage to either one.

I know several people who have taken the SAT and got mediocre scores but when they took the ACT they got 34+. I guess it depends on the person, honestly it could just be a placebo effect where you think the ACT is easier so you score higher.

ACT if your score will be relatively stronger, obviously. What these east-coasters “think” they know does not necessarily represent the views of admission counselors.

It doesn’t matter what others think. Do what’s best for yourself.

Take the one you’re more comfortable with. If you tend to do better on the ACT, take the ACT. Colleges aren’t going to count you down because you’re from the east coast and chose not to take the SAT.

I agree with everyone, if you feel better and more comfortable taking the ACT and are sure you will get a higher score on it than on the AST, then by all means take the ACT instead! :)

Don’t forget, if you want, you can always take an SAT subjest test to show schools that you can do well on an SAT and excel in other subjects…

Best of luck to you!

P.S. - Don’t feel pressured to go with the majority.
