Picking what to do this summer...

I am fortunate to live very near a NASA Research center, which offers internships to highschool student each summer. Admission is not all that competitive (although it is a bit, of course), and would be a great experience to be sure.

However, I'm also interested in volunteering abroad over the summer.

It's also possible for me to do a pre-college type program or get a job, but I've done both of those in different summers...

I have a HUGE emphasis on science in my transcript and EC's (2-3 classes/year, all EC's are focused on it excluding track, debate, and young republicans). However I also have ZERO volunteer hours/community service. So you can see my dilemma...? NASA would look great, but I'm in dire need of CS. Thoughts, Opinions?

Leaning towards NASA, tbh... Anyways, I'd appreciate opinions. Also, if you have a suggestion for another summer pasttime that would look good to colleges, by all means...

Although having CS can be beneficial for college admission, its important to follow your passion. If your interested in this NASA internship go for it! Following your passion will really make your application shine instead of doing spending some a summer doing something half-hearted

Why not both? I doubt NASA would take up your entire summer. By both, I mean get involved in a volunteer opportunity at home.

NASA sounds much more prestigious and interesting.

I volunteer at the museum of discovery and science. There is probably many opportunities like that one that involve volubteering and science, you just have to look around.

I volunteer during the school year, so you can definitely begin to look for opportunities now.

There will be plenty of opportunities to do studies/research abroad in college, but NASA might not fit into your schedule later on.

If you prefer NASA, apply.
You can do community service throughout the school year and summer. Think of some projects to do on your own or at school, or volunteer somewhere, even once a week.

Suggestions;
Contact local nursing home to volunteer for activities. They can always use the help.
Run a book drive to donate to hospital, or even a preschool for kids with special needs (be specific in type/ages of books you are collecting.
Organize a fundraiser and sell baked goods at lunch, pizza after school, etc…

Anything works, just come up with a few ideas.
