I started looking at the "right now" pictures, and was reminded that I'll actually be at Swarthmore the day after tomorrow, for parents' weekend!

Supposed to be about 70 with showers on Friday, but a cold rain (50 degrees for a high) on Saturday! Hopefully, the prediction is wrong as usual!

It's Family and Friends' Weekend (PC title) wherein those of us fortunate enough to have children there come for a weekend. Swarthmore has various events to reaffirm our love for the school and reassure us that the tuition is worth it. Most colleges have these in the Fall, to coincide with a football game. Since we are football-less there, then they have it coincide with spring and everything blooming.

Here is the link to the Parent Page at Swarthmore, and there is then a way to see what events they have, and pictures from last year.

It really is a nice weekend, from what I have heard. They have a boat race on Sunday of original boats made by Swat students (some float, some don't). They also have lectures during the weekend and receptions. This year, there is a lecture about Swat's role in the Underground Railroad, plus a lot of other events planned.

That would be really interesting. It's probably about Lucretia Coffin Mott, one of the founders of the school. The Coffins first landed in Salisbury, MA, then moved to Nantucket Island. After a couple of generations, the Coffin offspring had overrun Nantucket and spread out across the country. Several branches of the extended Coffin clan were very instrumental in the Underground Railroad, including the North Carolina Coffins, who later moved to Indiana and founded Earlham College. Lucretia Coffin moved from Nantucket with her husband to Philadelphia, where she was also involved in the abolishionist movement, the Underground Railroad, and founding Swarthmore. She also organized the Seneca Falls Convention, which marked the start of the women's rights movement.

collegialmom,
It is a very nice weekend, although I am aggravated in anticipation of the lousy weather. We went two years ago when S was a freshman. The Crum Regatta was absolutely hilarious, and the Registrar, Martin Warner, dresses up in Admiral's regalia to give an official start to the race. We have been invited back by S this year, primarily I think because he needs us to bring a number of things to him. I also bet he's bucking for a trip into Philly to Pat's King of Steaks for a cheesesteak!

The photos are lovely, Bowtoserenity and arador. We went to Swat last weekend on Sunday when the weather was great. The trees are in bloom now, more so than where we live. The kids were all out on Parrish beach. There was a woman's rugby games going on, with broken bones at the end of it.
My son is going to NYC this weekend and we keep coming to Swat anyway, so he did not want us to go....ah maybe when he's a senior.

It is now a beautiful day at Swarthmore! The weather could be warmer, but the rain has cleared, and the campus is gorgeous as ever. And am I biased in saying that the students look happy today, and some seem even happier when seeing their parents!
