My D received a Tuition Exchange scholarship. My husband works at a college that participates in this program. Participating schools offer just a few scholarships per year to dependents of employees. It is competitive, so having high stats definitely helps–but is no guarantee of recieving one of the few awarded. D was fortunate that she was offered TE at 2 of the 3 participating schools where she applied. SIT offers the “set rate” scholarship of $35k per year for 4 years.

D was also invited to be a Pinnacle Scholar. Headed to Stevens today for a Pinnacle Scholar brunch and Accepted Students Day!

@OCNYmom interesting info about the TE scholarship. Congratulations on D’s acceptance into the program~

FYI pinnacle scholar people - housing is NOT included in the perks - you are a lottery person just like the rest :frowning:
Big decisions come Monday! anyone else having tough choices to make? Full price at ivy’s, free ride at state school honors program or 1/2 price at SIT pinnacle scholar. Ughhhh. Advice?

Good luck. You do have a hard decision ahead. If all else fails, you might want to ask yourself:

-Can we afford 4+ years at the school where you have to pay 1/2 or all the tuition? Is there grad school in the future? The full ride will come in handy to pay for schooling after the BA/BS.
-Will your child stay in STEM or business? If not, Stevens would not be a good choice.
-Does your child want a big or small campus?
-are sports important to him/her (football, basketball, etc.?)
-how easy is it to get to/from the school?
-does your child have any friends attending any of these schools?
-do you feel pressure to send your child to the Ivys?

All I can do is tell you why my DD chose Stevens…
small size
recruited athlete / loved the coach
fit in our budget
not in the South
near NYC
Hoboken!
loves urban lifestyle
knew she’d stay in STEM
she is with ‘her people’

Mom and Dad’s reasons:
small size - she is an introvert and would have been lost at our state flagship U
With the merit aid, costs same as state flagship which is very stingy with aid
great co-op program (she works in NYC right now)
location (on a coast)
in ‘honors’ program
great reputation and stats after graduation
safety
great housing (as a female it’s easier to get off campus housing b/c there are just fewer females competing for spots)
ample public transportation for her to get around (no need for car - good for our insurance rates)
easy to get to/from EWR
happy she can live near NYC at this stage in her life / sad that she likes it so much she wants to stay after graduation :frowning:

@MomEof3 Good luck with the decision! It is a tough one. Honestly, I would knock out the Ivy right away. Even an Ivy would not be worth the debt you would accrue paying full price. The full ride at the state school honors program could be an excellent choice – as long as your S or D wants to be there.

I agree with @milwaukeegirl on the many reasons to choose Stevens. Half price at SIT could work out well, but only you know what is best for you financially. Is your HS senior leaning toward SIT or the State School?

My D was stuck between SIT and Worcester Polytechnic Institute. We attended the Accepted Students Day at Stevens on Sun 4/23, along with the Pinnacle Scholar Brunch. Stevens has a wonderful location, a lovely campus, and a great reputation. For us, the decision between SIT and WPI was not about money, though. With scholarships, the Cost of Attendance was nearly the same for both and roughly equivalent to a NY state SUNY school.

In the end, my D decided on WPI. (Two days ago!) Though there was lots to like at SIT, she simply felt more at home at WPI. She liked their project-based, 7-week-term approach. Also, she is heavily into music and theater in HS-- WPI’s Humanities requirement means that there are more opportunities for her in those areas there. No scholars program or Hoboken location, but I believe she has made the right choice for her.
