Is anyone going to the Scholar's Reception on the 14th, or has anyone been? S is still trying to make a decision between Stevens and another school, and we are thinking of making the trip for this to get another look at the school/etc. Thoughts anyone???

My son was accepted to 5 year masters, but missed scholar by 20 points… Doh!

I’m a big believer in the “fit” of the school to the child. The more exposure the better. Maybe contact admissions to see if you can get an overnight with some classes set up too.

Do the same at the other school.

More information = better decision.

granipc- Did the invite say where it was being held? Not sure if they have more than 1 Scholars’ reception. My son went to one last year but not sure if it is the same one.

maikai- what do you mean your son missed scholar by 20 points?

My D was accepted to scholars, is also struggling to decide between Stevens and another school. She received a letter stating that the Scholars Reception is April 14th and that an official invitation was forthcoming. We will attend the reception as I feel the more exposure she has to the “top 2 schools” the better as she tries to make a decision.

Pharryn I will say that women are in the minority at Stevens so that may affect her decision. My son really wanted to be near NYC and was not concerned about the m/f ratio.

He liked the small campus and proximity to the city.

I think they are allowed to take 1 free course at NYU per semester. They also socialize a lot with NYU students as it is a quick and easy PATH ride.

ok maikai I see you mean SAT points. Do you know what the SAT cutoff is for Scholars?

granipc- In answer to your question about the scholars’ reception: I think it would help if your student is seriously considering Stevens. There should be a lot of faculty walking around and students as well (they like the free food that is served) so you can talk to people about whatever is on your mind. We found the students to be extremely helpful and patient in answering our questions about everything.

My son has made his decision to attend Stevens & we are definitely going to the Accepted Students Day on Apr. 21, but what I was wondering, is it necessary to go to both that & the Presidential Scholars Reception??
They are both 4 hour events & I’m thinking it might be overkill, but don’t want to skip the Scholars Reception if it’s something we SHOULD attend. Does anyone know?

That’s a good question Dina. I don’t remember going to two events last year, although my son did receive a scholarship and is in the scholars program.

If I were you I would call someone in admissions and ask them about attending both. Stevens runs their events very nicely: very organized, plenty of people around to talk to, plenty of food. We had an excellent time when we went. And it rained that day!

You can get into scholars by getting a gpa of 3.8 or higher your first semester. I am a Junior (3 out of 4) CPE Bachelors/Masters scholars student at Stevens if you have any questions.

Thanks, Arch. I guess you are not in coop? Are you doing any other jobs or internships through Stevens? My son is still undecided about doing coop vs getting jobs/internships on his own.

Also do you live in Stevens housing or in non Stevens housing and why do you prefer it?

I am not in coop, I am doing an internship this summer through a company that did an information session at the school. Since I’m not in the coop program the process happens mostly through the company’s HR department. I know coop students who have had positions at the same company as well. It probably slightly harder to get an internship if you are not in the coop program. I commute to school since I only live about 15 minutes away.

Can anyone explain what the afternoon will consist of? I’m attending on Sat but the invitation was vague. Also I’m assuming that this isn’t a jeans a t-shirt event but I really have no idea what to expect.

Tlaxengineer I will tell you what I remember from last year’s ‘accepted students’ day’. I am not sure if this is different than the scholar’s reception, or the scholar’s reception is part of it. My son was in the scholar’s program and this is what we went to last year.

You arrive and there are stations set up alphabetically to find your arrival materials. I think they give you a map, some brochures, and a tshirt in a string bag. Then you go and have some breakfast- there are many stations set up with bagels, danish, fruit, water, coffee, etc. If you have received a special scholarship of some kind, you may have been asked to meet in a different area for breakfast.

After that I remember walking around to different areas on some type of tour. Also there was a big tent set up with representatives of various on campus clubs set up to give out information. There was lunch available here at the clubs area: hot dogs, pretzels, ice cream sodas, chips, etc.

Then there was an address from the president in the auditorium with several current students giving short talks on their experiences. Not sure if that was before or after the clubs area.

During the day, there were many random students walking around (they told us because they liked the free food) who were very happy to talk to us and answer questions.

At the end everyone went to another building (maybe the gym?) to hear the jazz band play and there was this huge dessert station set up, like the whole room. Tons of candy and desserts and stuff.

I think my son wore jeans and a tshirt. He definitely didn’t dress up, but again, this was accepted students’ day.

If you are talking about the Scholar’s Reception on the 14th (different than Admitted Students Day) they told his slacks and a nice shirt, no tie necessary.

ok the Scholar’s reception is different then. My son did not attend a separate scholar’s day, he just attended a separate breakfast on the admitted students day.

Don’t miss the admitted student’s day; we really enjoyed it.

So how was the Scholar’s Day reception? I was on campus later in the day and I saw a few parents walking around with their kids. About how many people attended?

We ended up not going. Curious to hear how it was too. We’re going to Accepted Students Day on the 21st though.

S went alone… he’s doing an athletics recruiting visit at the same time, so they picked him up at the airport, hosted him in the dorm overnight, etc. so I didn’t get to go. BOO! He won’t be home until late tonight and of course must be FAR TOO BUSY to answer my texts!!! Ha!

I hope he has a good time. Let us know what he thinks.
