Pitt Start Dates

Does anyone know if there is a wait list for additional Pitt start dates? DD received her dates to choose from, all in July and end of August right as classes begin. Do they ever offer a wait list for earlier options? She is working full time in July and with travel distance it will be difficult.

What college is she in? My daughter is in A &S and has a May date. Students who are in other colleges have only certain dates they can attend. Her roomate is in engineering and is going in July and didn’t have as many choices.

Last year my daughter went to the last Pitt Start in August due to travel distance. We didn’t want to travel back and forth to Pitt twice in such a short period of time. She was accepted into college of A&S. She had no problem getting her classes scheduled and it saved us two round trips. As for a wl, you could call and ask admissions too.

Thanks for your replies, they are helpful. DD is in Engineering, that may be the reason for the July only dates, other than the one in late Aug.

Yes, my dd commited very early, also engineering and July was the earliest

Do you know if there is a worry about attending the final pitt start and not getting the classes you need as a freshman engineer?

No worry about getting into classes - they reserve spots but might not get best schedule or best profs - but they will move things to ensure frosh get all those required engineering classes. But if you’re coming in w AP classes and placing out of those courses (eg chem) fitting the next course in the sequence - you are basically last to try to register so might not get those

My daughter opted for a Pittstart date in July hoping that her AP scores would be in by then. She is in A&S.

D hasn’t received any Pitt Start dates yet. Does anyone know what the date choices for Engineering are?
I want to check our family calendar for conflicts.

Oh, I have another question - does Pitt have any “early move in” options for Freshmen? (Like some colleges have optional academic or service or other activities on campus a few days before official move in )

@scholarme, Once/if your daughter has enrolled at Pitt she will receive an email with information about Pittstart and how to register within 3-5 business days. The dates differ depending on what program you are in and what is available at the time you register for PittStart (some sessions fill up quickly and they won’t show up as options in your daughter’s account when she logs in to register).

As for moving in, your daughter can opt for the final PittStart session and she will be able to move in on Monday, August 24th while attending PittStart. All other freshmen move in 24th-26th. New and Transfer Student Orientation will run from August 24-30. PittStart and Orientation have been designed so that the programs will not interfere with each other, so there is nothing to worry about there. Then fall term classes will begin Monday, August 31st.

Thanks @hailtopitt1787 !

There’s also a “retreat” being offered so you can move in early: http://www.fye.pitt.edu/FYERetreats/index.php

@amandakayak that was the kind of thing I was wondering about, thanks! Do you know anyone whose done one of those retreats?

I think this is new because in past the retreats were more sounding like camping trips and in the middle of summer like late July.

Is there a deadline for PittStart registration?

I don’t know if there is, but like I told my daughter, if you wait, some of the dates will be gone. I also have to book a hotel and having a Pittstart date set now helps with planning around those dates the rest of the summer. We have to schedule eye exam, dentist, physical and she is also working this summer.

@Chelsey123, there is no deadline per se, but it is better to register as soon as you can. Popular dates will fill up. There is no cost to register and it just takes a minute! Ultimately, you will need to register at least two weeks before the date you would like to attend.

About placement tests, do they happen during Pitt Start, or before, or …?

I know they have an online math one that must be completed soon, I’ve been nagging my daughter to get to it!
