Pitt vs. Carnegie Mellon

I am looking into both University of Pittsburgh and Carnegie Mellon. I want to go into a a biology or pre-med major, which is the better pick??? I know CMU has a better ranking because of its engineering program and Pitt has a good science program but I'm not sure which is better.

Which is better for you? Have you visited either one?

Yes… I live in the same area so I know both of them pretty well but I’m not sure which one is better academically for my major.

Hello???

CMU probably - better all-around school IMHO

im interested in this questions as well, anyone care to elaborate?

cmu is far more prestigious.

CMU may have the better overall record nationally, but Pitt has a better reputation in biomedical fields. Also, it is possible to get guaranteed seven-year medical school admission at Pitt, which is certainly a plus given that Pitt has a top-10 med school. From what I understand, CMU’s pre-medical and life sciences programs are a lot newer than Pitt’s, and Pitt gets more research money for health sciences. Still, you can’t really go wrong with either school and CMU’s prestige is probably more in a national context.

Premed & biomed: definitely Pitt…and it is significantly cheaper.

Pitt doesn’t just have more research funding for health sciences than CMU, it is in a completely different league. It is #5 in the nation (behind Harvard, Johns Hopkins, Penn and UCSF), and CMU isn’t in the top 50. The undergrad research opportunities at Pitt more varied and numerous. At either school, you’re likely to a great preparation for med or graduate school, and they are completely collaborative universities, so you’d be able to work at labs in either, but there are far more labs at Pitt. Having a diploma at CMU will be absolutely no advantage over Pitt, or vice versa, in applying to med or grad school, but Pitt will be significantly cheaper, and likely offer significantly more merit awards.

Pitt is much better known nationally in the biotech/med fields. CMU is much better known in computer science. They sponsor several joint programs where their expertise overlaps, such as computational neuroscience.
