I am torn between Pitt and Miami OH, my dad went to Miami and my sister went to Pitt. I am going for engineering and nrotc. I have analyzed all the different pros and cons and come up split 50-50. Im so undecided I've begun to look at stupid things like who makes me take a placement exam?(I hate placement exams) Aside from visiting the campuses does anyone have any advice or input?

I've been looking at the same ones (funny, the three schools I'm looking at have now been compared in different threads). Miami is smaller, less urban, and more focused on the undergraduate programs. I liked Pitt better because of the city, the campus diversity, and the larger variety of programs. Miami I think has a bit of a reputation for being rather homogenous with a lot of wealthy white students (Someone tell me if this isn't true). Anyway, there's my two cents.

I don't know too much about engineering at Pitt (my daughter is a language major) but I noticed that Pitt just received a $41 million donation and will rename the engineering school after the donor, Swanson. I'm sure the money will be put to good use to benefit the students.

Swanson School of Engineering: University of Pittsburgh

I think Pitt is very dedicated to the success and retention of the freshman students. There is lots of academic help and advising available. Also, many undergrads participate in research, internships and co-ops, all of which are great supplements to classroom learning.

Knowing people from both Pitt and Miami of Ohio, I agree with Chrys' impression of diversity. While I think Pitt is more diverse overall, the engineering school does not have a very large representation of minorities. Also, there tends to be more women in some engineering majors than in others.

You might post this in the Miami thread and see what they say.
