Pitt vs. Northeastern vs. Tulane

With exactly one month to decide where I'm going, I'm down to Northeastern, Pitt, and Tulane. I honestly don't know how to pick one over the other so I would really appreciate any information!! A little about me:

I'm an undecided major so it's important that wherever I go be accommodating and helpful.

I am from Ohio and since I'm definitely going out of state, state-wide diversity is preferred (not super excited about Pitt's 70% from Pennsylvania).

I have a pretty Midwestern attitude – relaxed about clothing and appearance, very go with the flow (I'm not too keen on Tulane and Northeastern's east coast majority).

I'm not a huge partier. Partying (in moderation) does not bother me, and I plan on attending many parties in my college career; but I also want to spend time in the city, go to events on campus, and hang out in my dorm and watch movies! I really want to be at a school where the social life is diverse (as described) and not constant parties with majority of students getting drunk all the time.

I don't play sports, but I love watching them so I want to go to a school where people love their sports teams and have immense school spirit!!

I don't plan on going Greek, so good Greek/Non-Greek relations are very important to me.

Any information on any of these topics (or others) would be very helpful!! Thanks!!!

My DS, now a Sophomore had to decide between Pitt and Northeastern (we are from Rochester, NY). Pitt was far better from a financial perspective and a better ranked Pharmacy school. Outside of the that I think Pitt meets your requirements! Pittsburgh is a great city and as much as I love Boston, everything is generally more affordable. Greek life is there if you want it, but not a big deal. He’s not a huge partier, but goes to some and enjoys hanging with his friends watching sports and movies. He loves going to Football and Basketball games and we have now been converted from SU fans to Pitt fans! From what I understand sports aren’t nearly as big at Northeastern, but they are a big hockey school. I recommend honors housing if you got to Pitt! Another “perk” at Pitt will be it’s much easier to get home and depending on where you are in Ohio, they have buses home for Thanksgiving, Christmas and Spring Break, which as been wonderful. They are just Pitt kids (and a few from CMU).
There are some older threads that compare Pitt with NEU if you search this thread just using Northeastern. Good luck with your decision!

Midwestern attitude and good sports would seem to strongly favor Pitt. In fact, I would say it isn’t even remotely close. The other two schools would not even be considered as having major sports anywhere near the level that Pitt does.

Tulane is about 13% Greek, Pitt is about 9% and NU about 4%. None of these schools would be dominated by a Greek scene.

Pitt would probably be considered a middle of the road party school. There when you want it, but definitely not necessary for a social life. The university is actively engaged in trying to facilitate its students taking advantage of the city: see [Pitt Arts](<a href=“PITT ARTS | Student Affairs”>http://www.pittarts.pitt.edu/) and Pitt’s [free public transportation agreement](http://www.pc.pitt.edu/transportation/agreement.html). I don’t know of another school that has as good of programs in this regard as Pitt.

The only thing Pitt doesn’t have for you is a high out of state %. The last freshman class had dropped to 67% in-state. It is dropping every year. Keep in mind that only 17% come from Pittsburgh’s home county. There is a large student population from the Eastern Pennsylvania/Philadelphia region, which honestly, is really like a different state…I’d even say that it is more different than Pittsburgh is from Ohio.

In what school? Any fields you’re considering? Being undecided in Engineering is different than being undecided in A&S, for example.

This is actually interesting- I’ve never met someone who really wanted out-of-state diversity (as compared to just regular diversity). Like wgmcp said, a lot of Pitt students come from ALL OVER the state-- which is super diverse (as someone described it, Pennsylvania is Pittsburgh and Philly with Alabama down the middle), you get a bit of everything!

Pitt is essentially midwestern without the time zone change. It’s a super blue-collar town. Heck, they even call soda “pop”.

People go crazy about sports here. Mainly football and basketball for the school ones. And football/baseball/hockey for the city ones.

I often forget we have Greeks on campus at all.
