Pitt vs Penn State

Can someone compare Pitt and Penn State?, pros and cons please

I'm very interested in this as well.

Pitt has an urban campus, and Penn State doesn't.

hey guys, im applying to both and i gotta tell ya im SOO much more interested in going to Pitt. I can tell u guys that from what i learned on the tour they try and make as many activities to do on campus as they have off campus. Considering theyre in the heart of Pittsburgh, thats a lot. Penn State tries to focus on stuff on campus since its in the middle of nowhere. Thats why Penn State football is so big because once thats over...there isnt too much else to do.

JJac610 is obviously an idiot, which may be why he is so impressed with Pitt. There is a lot to do at Penn State University Park. It's one of the top 15 public universities in the country. Seriously, don't take my word for it. Go visit both campuses and Penn State's campus and resources will speak for itself. Pitt is a good school, but Penn State University Park is better.

...enough of the childish insults. They're both about equal in rankings, with Penn State being slightly higher.

That said, it's pretty much an environment difference (and a few particular majors such as architecture). Pitt is much more urban and is very near Pittsburgh, Penn State is in the middle of nowhere. Depends on which you prefer.

Also, Penn state is much stingier with scholarship $$$$ :)

It is really up to you -- visit both campus and decide!!!

jec, honestly ur gonna sitt there on ur little computer telling every 1 that a place thats in a rural area compared to a place thats in the heart of a major city. And btw big man... dont call me an idiot u don't even no me, and ur on a college forum...grow up.

"dont call me an idiot u don't even no me, and ur on a college forum"

It's actually, "don't call me an idiot "you" don't even "know" me, and "you're" on a college forum". Based on the level of your grammar, I think I was about right. Anyway, I am done pointing out your personal faults. Enjoy Pitt.

State College is the quintessential college town. There are always things going on. Penn State does not seem like it is in the middle of nowhere. Pitt is a good school, as JJac610 is not representative of the entire student body. Just go visit both, that should make the choice pretty clear on which one you want.

WOW cuz i write in internet slang...WHAT- A -LOSER. Get a life dude.

jec - I completely agree with you that jj made some ill-advised comments regarding PSU. It technically is in the middle of nowhere, but I challenge any of you to spend a weekend there and tell me if it feels like you're in the "middle of nowhere". If you come away saying, "it's in the middle of nowhere", then clearly you have no idea what you're talking about. I always thought that the city life was for me, but after visiting Penn State a few times, I realized I could get along just fine in a less urban area. Overall it's an awesome campus and in the Fall especially, it's a very fun place to be.

That said jec, your comments speak to the unfortunate attitude Penn State students seem to have - that being that PSU is the greatest place on earth and anyone who doesn't agree is an idiot. It's a superiority complex that I find particularly perplexing being that you guys are a public school and evenly ranked with Pitt (I guess I'm saying I would have expected this attitude from a top-tier private institution). PSU is a solid school and undoubtedly a good time, but isn't it possible that people can find other things interesting or for that matter, have different tastes?

I personally go to Pitt, and like to visit PSU as nearly all of my friends are enrolled there. They all have their personal complaints about Pitt when they come to visit (ex. "What, $5 for a party?!?!?!), but I have mine about PSU as well ("Wait, so because I don't know brother xyz's social security number, I can't get a beer at this frat or come in?")

Bottom line is, whichever school you attend, you'll quickly come submerged in its social culture, so I wouldn't let that worry you too much. Focus on the academic side of things, specifically, how their separate schools compare (i.e. Pitt's CBA vs. Smeal College of Business - I actually don't know if that's the exact name, but you get the point).

Basic comparison:

Socially -

Biggest difference. Penn State definitely has more of a party atmosphere and rightfully so. That's how things tend to work when the student body is 2x as large. If you know people, it's generally easier to find a party at PSU, and they're very fun as well. The first semester is great too because of football. Flat out, Pitt cannot compare in this realm. No one gets ready for a football game like PSU.

On the flip side, while Pitt parties aren't as great in number, one could argue they might be better in overall quality. You don't have to know 8 people in a particular fraternity to get in and sure, you have to pay $5, but even the cheapest of cheapest could admit that $5 for all you can drink is pretty solid. Plus, once you hit your junior year and are 21, the bar scene is probably a little better as you have Oakland, the Southside, and Station Square to choose from.

Environment -

Someone once argued that they'd rather go to a school where the town was there because of the school. That essentially defines Penn State. State College is a college town, flat out. Pittsburgh, as you know, is not. I really don't see as huge of a difference as people tend to make of it though. There are advantages to living in the city, but I see advantages to being in a less-urban climate. Again it's all in what you want.

Academics -

Push. They're pretty dam even here.

Eh go with Pitt. Penn State is alrite but State College=the sticks. Although, penn state does have a bartending class...hmm.

Like a campus that is integrated into a city? Go to Pitt.
Like a college town? Go to PSU.
LOVE Football? Go to PSU. Take or leave it? Go to Pitt.
Not too much difference in academics - although each school has it's strengths depending on your intended major.
I know happy students at both schools.

Regarding academics, which of these two schools has the better Biology major?

I would guess that Pitt does, simply because it's an excellent medical school, and biology is obviously related to that.

negativenowhere -- Keep it mind that you posted this topic in the University of Pittsburgh forum. Of course, the majority of people that check this forum are going to be Pitt fans, so if you want more variety of opinions that are less biased, I would suggest posting this topic in a more generalized forum. Just a thought.

And to answer your question, it really depends on what you're looking for. Academically? or socially?

Which do you guys think is better academically?

I don't know too much about Penn and Pitt, but I do know the basics. If you're in anything business or engineering related, go to Penn. They have joint programs with Wharton (which is globally ranked as #1 for business) If you're interested in the medical field/health sciences, go to Pitt. They're one of the top public research schools in the nation, alongside UIUC, UCLA, UC-Berkeley, UNC-Chapel Hill and UM-Ann Arbor. I know that Pitt's medical/health science programs are really good, but I don't know the rankings besides physical therapy (because that's my major of concentration). In Physical Therapy, they are ranked #2 in the nation.

Hakuna - Penn State has joint programs with Wharton? That's actually pretty interesting and something I was completely unaware of.

are you serious? hakuna, this is Penn STATE and pitt, not Penn and Pitt.

business = PSU (smeal)
engineering, medicine, science = Pitt
partying = PSU
city = Pitt
college town -- PSU

really.... it just depends what you want in a college. both are great schools.
