How cold are the winters in Pittsburgh? I know they're warmer (and not nearly as snowy) as the ones here in Syracuse, so would a medium weight coat be fine?

Ive lived in Pittsburgh my whole life and winters are a little crazy it will be 5 degrees with a negative wind chill one week with a fair amount of snow and then 60 degrees the next. Last month our school had 3 delays because it was -5 with the wind chill and 6 days later it was 65 and sunny. Its better to be prepared

Not as much snow as Syracuse but still wintery. We also get some lake effect. Syracuse gets close to 100 inches/year and Burgh gets about 40-some on average.

DD wears one of those lighter weight quilted coats most of the time. She did not even take her down jacket with her this year.

DS wears a lightweight Northface fleece jacket when it gets really cold.

Depends on your kid too. Some have better ability to stay warm as long as they’re walking than others. Coming from Cuse, they may be so used to cold that the Burgh will feel downright toasty.

Coming from MN, I must say that Pitt is not very cold. The only thing that makes it feel cold is the wind. Bring rainboots/real snow boots since the snow doesn’t get cleared so you will often be slushing your way to classes. I have yet to wear my real winter coat. Usually my soft shell jacket does the trick, but on the colder days, I would wear a sweatshirt underneath.

I’m from Los Angeles, so anything below 50 is cold for me! I was there in the summer and it was pretty hot and humid, but from what I’ve seen on the Winter Classic and the NFL, it gets snowy!

We’re from New England, and the winters here are a bit colder than Pittsburgh. So, we thought my daughter would be fine with her NorthFace fleece that she normally wore. However, this past winter in Pitt was apparently much colder than normal. She ended up buying a down jacket and wore it often.

She does live on upper campus, and has quite a distance between some of her classes, so that also makes a difference. If you are living in Towers, and you are not venturing far, it’s probably not as much of a concern.

Ive lived in Pittsburgh my whole life and weather here is very unpredictable, in February it can be 60 one day then by the end of the week it can be below zero with the wind chill. For me, if its bad i wear a hoodie and a north face apex jacket that is pretty thin, Ive never really felt a need for a huge puffy winter jacket. And like giraffodil get some boots there’s slush everywhere

are they as bad as chicago weathers? cause those suckkkk
