i heard it rains everyday.

LOL it sure rained a lot the weekend we visited, but it was flooding in NY so we actually got lucky!

it does rain a lot, and it's cloudy a lot, and pretty windy, but it doesn't get very cold and doesn't snow a lot at all (i'm from chicago).

In the early fall, it is comfortably warm with rain about once a week.
In the late fall, it rains about 3 times a week and it's comfortably cool.
In the winter, it averages cold, but not frigid... talking like 20's. It also snowed about 6 inches 3-4 times last winter.
In the early spring, it rains about 3 times a week and it's pretty cold for spring.
In the late spring, it rarely rains and it's comfortably warm.

I'm also from Chicago, so hot = 90+
and cold = 30-

If you are used to Chicago, expect less extremes, more rain, and less changes in weather from day to day.

i think it's hot early fall, around 80s/90s fahrenheit. Especially in a dorm w/o A/C. In the winter it gets cold. But that will last maybe 2-3 weeks and then temperatures drop to comfort levels for fall. Mainly 60s. Close to the end of first semester, temperatures will drop to around 30. Anyone from down south is going to find Pittsburgh to be a very cold place. Weather can get into the 10s around January.

Hope that helps.

Weather can be quite unpredictable- many times you might leave your room in the morning with lovely weather, and when your classes are done it's drizzling and cloudy. One day last year it was 70s and sunny in the morning and 35 and raining by nightfall. A bunch of my friends complain that it's really humid, but I'm from Houston so nothing is humid in comparison to that. This winter was a bit colder than usual, I think. Make sure you have an umbrella. :)

The weather definitely sounds different than California where I am from. Is 6 inches of snow a lot of snow?

It doesn't snow that much in Pittsburgh, and when it does the sidewalks are cleared pretty quickly, although some of the roads are not fun to walk across since they're filled with nasty slush. 6 inches is a pretty large amount of snow for Pittsburgh.

I was disappointed by the lack of plowing by the city of Pittsburgh. I know there's a budget crisis, but common! Chicago's streets are plowed in a couple hours, whereas Pittsburgh sometimes just doesn't plow at all...

(I'm talking about snow)

ps. 6 inches isn't "a lot of snow" but it's noticeable and stays on the ground for a few days

Pittsburgh has some budget problems that are partially responsible for poor plowing- a few years ago they managed to run out of salt at the end of winter.

Hi, I do not atten CMU (though I would like to-still in hs), but I have lived in pittsburgh all my life. The weather last year was an uncharacterisitc, especially in winter-usually it is much colder consistently. With the colder weather, it snows more reguarly-a dusting a few times a week, a couple inches every few weeks, and around six inches once in a while. Luckily, there is no lake-effect snow like in Chicago, so it rarely snows more than two feet at one time (only 4 times in about 16 years). I agree that plowing sucks, especially on side roads which are often left unplowed. Also, temperatures are not as extreme as in midwest-highs hardly even get above 90F in summer or lower than 10F in winter. It is cloudy all the time (mostly cloudy, hardly ever just sunny) and it rains a lot-in terms of weather it is pretty much terrible as you can see
