My S accepted at Pitzer for Class of 2022. Is it better to do CS at 5C’s vs UCSD CS. My son accepted into UCSD Math-Computer Science. Any thoughts. He loved Pitzer campus.
Cost?
@coolweather cost is not an issue for us. The real question is can my son reasonably complete a Math + CS degree by enrolling for classes at one of the other 5C’s vs UCSD where he is set on a CS major.
Yes. Off-campus CS majors at Mudd/Pomona are treated exactly the same and get the full privileges as current students do. The concern should not be about feasibility- the consortium was specifically designed to allow this.
Here’s the info to read to understand policies: https://www.cs.hmc.edu/off-campus-students
I would highly advise scheduling the time to visit both schools and talking to the department chair for CS. Furthermore, I would try to contact Pitzer students/alumni doing the track at either regarding their experiences in being an off-campus major- not just in the department, but in securing jobs/internships. The degree you get will be from Pitzer, and you’ll have to explain you actually did the CS requirements from Mudd/Pomona. The culture is very different at each of the three schools, and the major is rigorous enough that long hours will be spent at another college.
