That is indeed an impressive r

Thank you so much. I just hope this information will be useful for future Paul Tulane Scholarship recipients.

It does. It supports that the winners almost always have top stats and other attributes, as one would expect. What would be interesting would be to see if any of the winners had stats that were not quite at that level.

Paul Tulane Award Recipient:

National Merit Finalist,35 ACT, high 700s/800s in SAT2s, AP Scholar w/Honor, 4.0 UW (rank: 1st-probably tied), 4.8+W (rank: top 6-7%), APs (all APs senior year), college courses, numerous school/district/regional/state awards, class officer, ECs such as quiz bowl, mock trial, mu alpha theta, student council, engineering, key club, and various honor societies, hundreds of volunteer hours, side tutoring job, nominee for Student of the Year, etc.

Received Presidential scholarship w/ honors invite upon admission to Tulane

I think I qualify as one of those winners whose stats were “not quite at that level”, especially while looking at Justmehere. I always feel weird posting my stats on here, but I guess since I love looking at other people’s I might as well post mine:

National Achievement Finalist, 34 ACT, Let’s not talk about my SATs I test badly on them, AP Scholar w/ Distinction (AP classes as follows: 1,2,4,2 Number I took not scores!), 3.5UW 4.667 W, School doesn’t rank but I feel like I’m not top 5% material (Magnet high school, competitive with some top 100 high schools), random state awards, Model UN, Seven years of club/school volleyball, 100 service learning hours, Academic Decathlon (2nd place at nationals… now feel free to stalk me).

That’s it. I mean Acadec takes up a lot of time and so does club so I have limited extracurriculars but I think I’m fairly normal compared to some people who’ve received these kinds of awards.

I got the 25,000 scholarship (I think) and honors invitation upon admission.

Also I thought it was really nice how they put that little personal touch on the letter, about your essay. It made me feel like they actually read it, which I know they did, but sometimes you have to wonder if they don’t just throw darts at the papers since there are so many people who deserve these scholarships and don’t get them.

^Congrats to you. Thanks for sharing.

Well Emmy, I have to say that your stats are still quite impressive! There is really no difference between a 34 and a 35, both 99 percentile IIRC. And 9 AP classes is pretty rigorous. So in my book you not in a lower tier statistically as it pertains to these awards. In fact your record is pretty awesome, and obviously Tulane agrees. Apparently your essays were great also.

I agree the personal touch is great. They do the same on the DHS, referring to the project in some way.

So congrats! Is Tulane your destination in the fall?

Notification for Paul Tulane came today - looks like I’m going to Tulane next year. :´).

I also was previously offered the 27k, presumably for strong test scores (36 ACT, 800 CR/690 M/800 W SAT, NMSF).

Super, cruxclaire. Welcome to the Tulane family.

Congratulations aliciaepiq1, Justmehere, debra19 and your sons on winning the awards. Also, congratulations to emutt95, emmymillions, and cruxclaire on your high school achievements and the awards you received. Best wishes to everyone else still waiting.

Hello all. I too received notification yesterday of the Paul Tulane Award. Can’t believe it – I don’t think I’ve ever won anything involving a competition before! Thank you, thank you, thank you Tulane!! I love that they personalized the award letter to reflect my essays (I picked All you need is love…and the one about planning and planting for future generations).

Looking forward to coming down for honors weekend in March.

In my case I think the essays must have made the difference, because even though my stats were decent (3.8+ uw gpa, 800/740/800, NMSF), I have few A.P.s (school offers only a handful) and my most time-consuming extracurricular is a job in retail, plus math related stuff and some community service.

At any rate, though I feel unworthy, I’m incredibly grateful. There is a lot to be said for embracing the school that embraces you, or whatever the saying is.

Congrats to other recipients, and wishing good luck to all those still waiting to hear.

That is very exciting Olympia. I know you were really excited about Tulane, so this obviously makes it much easier to attend.

I do think some students are too hard on themselves, or get too caught up in some of the stats posted by other students. I have to tell you, Olympia, that a 3.8+ UW is excellent, and a 2340 SAT is obviously among the very best in the nation. All schools, Tulane included, takes into account if your school doesn’t offer many AP courses. After all, what are you supposed to do about that? As long as you challenged yourself to a reasonable extent within the situation you had, that is all they can ask. Same with EC’s. If you are working, you are working. Some people have to.

You are completely worthy of this achievement, I am sure. More important, Tulane is sure. Have a great time at Honors Weekend.

Thank you so much for your kind, encouraging words, as well as your invaluable information on this forum, FC.

Bummer…no UPS packet and no confirming email. Does anyone recall when the email went out last year confirming that you did not receive the scholarship?

I might not be recalling this correctly, but I think last year they sent paper letters via regular mail. But as was pointed out, this year they said it would be e-mail, unless Jeff made a mistake and meant regular mail. As best I can remember, people seemed to be getting the word about mid-week after the winners got their packages.

The UPS truck stopped just past our driveway at about 5PM, and then he went to another home for the delivery! I’m just glad my daughter wasn’t here to see it! She knows that both DHS and Paul Tulane are incredibly competitive, but it still would have gotten her hopes up. I know it did mine on her behalf…

The Presidential scholarship is terrific, but still leaves a significant gap between Tulane’s cost and our state schools. And we’re in that big middle group that fallenchemist talks about – not rich enough to pay full freight and not poor enough to get need-based aid. But we’re coming down for the Honors weekend in March, and I suspect she’ll love it. And then we’ll see what the fates have in store for her as March proceeds!

Congrats to those who have heard, and good luck to the rest!

It is a really tough situation sometimes, I know. But have you actually filled out the worksheets to see if you might actually be eligible for something? Many people have told me that they were sure they could not qualify and then were surprised when some need-based aid was available. Just saying, in case you think it might be worth the effort just to be sure.

Hey all! I just received news of the Paul Tulane Award yesterday and was completely shocked when I won! I didn’t think I was well enough qualified after seeing all of your stats. With that and notification that I am a finalist for the Altman Program yesterday I can’t see how I can turn down the school. Sorry to those of you who didn’t win; I really didn’t expect to get it myself, seeing as there were thousands of applicants and only 50 winners; there are so many well-qualified applicants out there who I am sure will receive similar recognition elsewhere. Best of luck!

We just got back from our visit to Tulane as all this was happening and D got nothing - no letter saying she didn’t get it and no package saying she did. Since we had just gotten home, she called the school and spoke to someone in admissions. They said that the kids who did not win the award would be getting a letter in the MAIL, not an email as Jeff’s blog post said. He also told her that the letters and packages went out as decisions were made, so they would probably NOT all arrive at the same time as they were not all mailed out at the same time. Still, we aren’t holding out much hope at this point, but that’s okay.

Thanks Alex…we are also no longer holding out hope. Just booked our flights to Atlanta and DC prior to the April Honors weekend. We were hoping to narrow down the list of schools but they are all options once again. Great weekend to all, and congrats to those who got the envelopes!
