I just mailed my application for the scholarship today, and it said that winners would be notified on a "rolling basis"? Has anyone found out yet, and any ideas on when we will be notified on whether or not we won?

Oh, and random question, but does anyone know the levels of automatic consideration scholarships? I'm not sure where my merit award so far stands in the grand scheme of things.

I would be shocked if they started judging before the scholarship deadline. With only 50 to award, they would at the very least need to get a feel for how many applications there are and the general academic quality of those that did apply. I think they made a point of saying “rolling basis” to differentiate it from the DHS, which has always notified everyone at the same time, usually the week of Presidents’ Day. Since this is the first year for the Paul Tulane, there is no way to know when people will start getting notified.

The levels of scholarship this year are $8,000 (Leadership), $20,000 (Academic Achievement), $22,000 (Founders), $25,000 (Distinguished Scholar), and $27,000 (Presidential). Which did you receive?

I posted this response on another thread, but am posting it here as well - fyi:

I checked with Tulane and was told that they “have not released any awards yet for the Paul Tulane Scholarship” and “expect that those will begin to go out in the coming month.”

Maybe I am just being dense, but why is the outcome of any of the scholarships a factor as to which event to attend? I am assuming that along with the scholarship you were accepted into the Honors Program already. Maybe that is where I am missing something.

Oh no, I just meant that I probably won’t be attending either event unless I get one of the scholarships. Not that the scholarship will determine which event I go to, but if I go to Tulane at all.

i called Tulane last week. I was told scholarship decision won’t be made available until late march. my son will also be applying for the Altman’s program in Business. I was told we won’t be notified until late march, early april. What this means is we won’t be making our travel reservation until april. all i know is, it will cost us a lot of $$ to visit during honors week in late april.

“Dean’s Honor notifications will be sent in late February or early March.”

“Community Service Scholarships will be announced in mid- to late March.”

“The Paul Tulane Award scholarships have not been awarded yet. They are done on a rolling basis but students will hear no later than April 1st. Most likely some time in March.”

The DHS and CSS are consistent with past notifications. Of course the PTA is new, so I guess we will se what actually happens, but it certainly is sounding like it will be late in the process.

I can tell you with absolute certainty that the DHS has been sent out the end of Presidents’ Day week each of the last 4 years, and from what I have been told it was the same at least the 2 years prior to that. So whichever counselor said “mid to late March” was probably confusing it with the CSS.

Here’s what I got recently from an admissions counselor:
“Paul Tulane Award decisions will be sent out as they become available, with applicants hearing back by April 1st at the latest. For the Paul Tulane Award, the Dean of Undergraduate Admissions is evaluating the scholarships. The Dean has not yet released any final decisions regarding the Paul Tulane Award since we received over 800 applications.”

Hey, I’ve been following everything related to Tulane for months now, but I haven’t actually worked up the courage to post anything. Tulane is absolutely my dream school, and I was accepted with merit scholarships of $20,000/year.

I know that I am not by any means the top of the class at Tulane, but I was wondering if anyone could tell me realistically if I have a shot at the DH or Paul Tulane. I have a 4.54 gpa, 2050 SAT, about 400 hours in community service, lead prosecutor for teen court, held my own blood drive, and I’ve been doing neuroscience research at Davidson College for the past year. I also feel that I had very strong essays for PT and a great project for DH. Does anyone have any thoughts on this? Without one of these scholarships there’s no way that I could go to Tulane.

I think it is very hard to predict this year. In the past when it was only the DHS and given the criteria that was being used then, I would have said your chances were pretty close to zero. The DHS was always awarded to students that had won either the Presidential scholarship ($27K this year) and sometimes the Distinguished Scholar Award ($25K this year). If there ever was a case of a Founders Award recipient getting one ($22K this year), it was highly exceptional. You are a merit award level below that. Also, the criteria outlined for the DHS is that the SAT scores should be 2250+.

However, some things seem to have changed this year. First, there are a lot more awards, since this is the initial year for the Paul Tulane and so that is 50 more full tuition scholarships than before. Second, there were no published criteria for the PTA. I have speculated before that it would seem likely the academic criteria would be similar, but Tulane may choose to use the award to attract candidates that are strong academically (obviously you are an excellent student, and don’t mean to imply otherwise) even if they don’t have “Ivy type” of stats, but that also display other characteristics that they feel put them in the highest strata for those qualities. Leadership, perseverance, creativity, etc. Who knows? Only Tulane. And there is nothing wrong with that. Merit is an inherently ambiguous term, we just always assume it means purely academic merit.

So that is all a long way of saying that no one here can really know how it will all turn out this year. I have an opinion, but I have no real basis for it so there is no sense in relating it. I wish you the best of luck, and can only advise that you try not to obsess about it. It is really hard, I know. Frankly if I were in your shoes I am sure I would be. But it does no good, so hopefully you can stay busy and not think about it too much. Also, hopefully, you have another school that you can afford that you feel is a great choice as well.
