Places to study...

I'm a transfer student and I don't know the campus too well yet. I have an afternoon class on Thursdays this fall and I'm trying to decide if it's worth staying at school until say 7 or 8 since I commute and want to avoid rush hour. I'd probably get more work done if I stayed on campus than go straight home after class.

What are the library hours for the fall? (I only see the summer hours up so far).

What are your favorite places to study?

Any recommendations for a North Campus student?

If you are looking for a quiet place in North Campus, you can study at Young Research Library. If you like the outdoors, you can study in the garden area near YRL. If you don’t mind noise, you can study in Northern Lights and get food there too. You can also go to college library or any of the other libraries on campus. I like studying in Kerkhoff personally but that’s in South Campus

Yeah I’ve been studying in Kerckhoff too. There’s a quiet study lounge on the second floor near the Charles e. Young grand salon. And if you go in there, there’s an even quieter one on the third floor.
Btw, where are you commuting from?

Untitled cafe in Broad has been pretty empty every time I’ve gone inside.

i usually vary in the places that i study. I usually try for Powell, although from time to time i will study in YRL, Kerkoff, luvalle, or northern lights.

Anderson’s a pretty good place to study, too. Though sometimes they don’t like undergrads using the cubes.

Thanks so much everyone! This is great. Are all of these places open in the evening?

By reading the UCLA website, it seems that the libraries aren’t open that late. I just want someplace to chill, study, or something until traffic dies down a bit.

Nooriebee - I’m commuting from the South Bay area/Torrance. The drive is a bit long, but I don’t have the $ to dorm.

This is summer so there are terrible hours for the libraries. But during the school year they’re open much longer, especially Powell. I think after week 2 it goes to being open 24 hours a day.

I’m pretty sure the libraries will be open after 7 during fall quarter. I’m not 100% sure about this but I think the libraries are open until 11 or midnight in the fall and open 24 hours during finals week, but I’m not absolutely sure on these numbers. I’ve been commuting for summer school doing the same thing that you plan on doing. I just stay on campus until around 6 and then I leave. I commuted from Torrance a couple of times this summer. From my experience, traffic is usually good after 6 so I don’t think you would need to stay on campus until 8 to wait for traffic. At 6 it will take you like 10 or 15 minutes to get onto the freeway but traffic is usually not that bad. I think by 7 the freeways should be moving fast

kwwboarder - I assumed the libraries would be open later, I just didn’t know how late. Coming from a community college where everything pretty much shut down after 5 or 6.

brosiedon - thanks for the info. I like to avoid as many idiots on the road as possible. The less people the better. Haha.

I’m going to assume that it’s ok to use the Young Research Library even though I’m not a grad student, right?

I think I’m just going to switch up the places where I study and try to find one I feel the most comfortable in. Really appreciate the help! :)

Even though I don’t live in the dorms anymore, I sometimes like to go to Covel Commons to study. Otherwise, I will usually go to Powell Library and very rarely I’ll go to YRL.

I never enjoy studying outdoors nor in coffee shops because they’re way too loud and distracting.

There’s also a lounge on like the 3rd floor of Public Affairs that’s for graduate students, but sometimes I go in there and study for an hour or two when I’m on campus.

@handymaps: Oh yeah, there are so many idiots on the 405. I was stuck in traffic going to Torrance at 4 o’clock and I swear I have never seen that many incompetent drivers. One of them almost crashed into me. And you don’t have to be a grad student to use YRL. In fact you don’t have to be a grad student to use any of the libraries on campus. According to my orientation counselor, during finals week though they don’t like undergrads using the graduate libraries so they are restricted to just graduate students.

I’m from Torrance too!! west Torrance.

Im a new student but I’ve been commuting all summer. But I just couldn’t take it! It’s way too much. I spend a total of 3hrs/day in traffic. I originally intended to commute throughout the school year but I just couldn’t take it. So I got an apartment.

But you’re a north campus major so hopefully the commute won’t affect your grade…

If you’re worried about money and a housing situation for when you do get tired out and hate your life from commuting, fin aid is really good with people who are not commuting. Actually I was getting 4,000 in grants before I changed my status to off-campus. Now I’m getting 10,000 in grants.

Good luck!! :)

Library hours in the Fall are definitely longer than in summer. I would also check into the department of your major to see their library hours. For example, for English majors, there’s the English reading room located in the Humanities building. It’s open in the Fall until 7 p.m. Mon thru Thurs. A great room to study in.

Another sort of unknown but good place to study in is the law library. However, being an undergrad rather than a law student or lawyer, you’re stuck with non-exempt status. Doesn’t mean you can’t get in to study, but you are given limited access – first come first served until the tickets are alloted. Of course, they close late on Thursdays – 11:30 p.m. But a good option.

I personally like a lot of “white” noise when studying, (and as a lawyer, I still “study”) but as an undergrad and in law school, I got my best studying done up at north campus facility (I guess what you guys call Northern Lights – Ha! It had just opened while I was there!). Or sitting in the archways in the front of Royce Hall.

I’m surprised no one mentioned the hills next to Janss Steps. Its peaceful and has a great view. You can even have a picnic if you want.

Agree with Gatos, but once daylight savings time goes back to standard, you’ll be in the dark at 5 p.m.!

^aww crap I forgot about that :frowning: winter sucks

@notaznguy - I would go to Covel Commons but I park in lot 3 which is north of the sculpture garden and would be one helluva walk just to study. Most of my classes are in Bunche Hall.

@brosiedon - the 405 is always crazy. Came back from Valencia today and a car on fire closed off all lanes going south near the Getty for 20-30 minutes. ***. Lol.

@nooriebee - I’m from Gardena, actually. But I did go to North High. Lol. My commute shouldn’t be too bad. I have an 8 am class M, W, and F and I’m an early riser. Also, I’m out by noon on those days so those days shouldn’t be a problem. Tuesdays and Thursdays are my problem days.

If the commute gets bad I have the option of moving to my grandma’s apartment near Korea Town. Yay for more financial aid! Haha.

@UCLA77 - that sounds like a good place to check out. I’m easily distracted. Lol. Thanks.

@gatos - I definitely wouldn’t mind sitting outside especially since it’s still kind of warm and light out. However, I’d only do it if I had reading to do. Otherwise I’d need a desk, an internet connection, and an outlet for my laptop. Thanks for the suggestion!

So many good suggestions!!! :)
