Also, is it better to just take everything from the beginning or try place out as much you can? I've heard horror stories where people are placed into very difficult foreign language classes as freshmen.

If you want to take a different language that's fine.

CAS has a MAP language requirement (2 years or something)- you can completely place out of it, or get put in a certain level class based on your ability shown on the SAT II - so you might only have one semester of language etc.

a girl i talked to when i visited said that she went in planning to be a spanish minor, tested out, and got put into the next spanish class. she barely passed it, said it was the hardest thing she's ever done, and stopped taking spanish classes. she planned on going to madrid for study abroad but she's now going to prague instead cause she knew she couldn't handle it.

moral of the story is who wants to place out anyway?

p.s. i think the spanish program is very good at nyu, maybe better and harder than the others.

Dilo, by completely place out, I mean avoid the requirement, period. Upsided, your story was exactly what I was talking about, I've heard this happen at so many colleges. People with great high school grades and perfect SAT II scores on the foreign language get destroyed in some advanced college class.

so basically the only reason to take the exam is if you just don't want to be bored out of your mind in elementary level classes. Just take the easy level and ace the crap out of it!!

I don't know the details regarding the SAT2's and the language recquirement. The only thing I can tell you is that when I came to NYU, I was given the Italian test, placed a score somewhere in mid to high 600's (don't remember exactly) and was excused from the first 3 of the 4 required classes.
