Placing Out of Courses

Does anyone know where I can find the information of placing out of freshmen courses?

This is from [IUB Office of First Year Experience Programs](http://www.indiana.edu/~fye/students/summer/freshmen/faq.html)

What placement tests are required during Orientation? How can I sign up?

All students will take a math skills assessment and foreign language placement exam as part of their Orientation Program. There is no need to sign-up for either of these tests, although you may be asked which language test you intend to take when making your reservation.

What optional tests are offered during summer orientation?

Students may take optional placement/exemption exams in Biology, Calculus, and Chemistry. The Chemistry exam is available online and should be taken prior to June 1. Biology and Calculus are offered the evening prior to your program and in the early morning before your program begins. While not required in most cases, these tests can provide students with exemption credit or placement in to higher level classes. There is one other opportunity to take Biology and Calculus in the fall, but it’s ideal to take it prior to meeting with your advisor at New Student Orientation.

If you intend to pursue science majors you should plan to take the Chemistry optional exam so that advisors can best help you in choosing appropriate courses. You will not be able to register for some Chemistry courses without this exam. See more information at [IUB Office of First Year Experience Programs](http://www.indiana.edu/~fye/students/cpe.html).

you can earn credit for your high SAT II scores in Biology or English–and you can also get credit through tests in certain departments (for example, in Korean or French if you know the language well enough already).

A 680 on the SAT II Biology exam gets you 3 credits for Biology E112, if over 720, you get credit for Biology E112 and E113.

And here is the link for the ENG-W 131 exemption:

Hi Illinois Mom from another mom

Thank you for your info. but I am still a bit confused. My son got a 4 on the AP English Language - does that exempt him from W 131 completely or does he have to take something else? Do we bring the AP score sheet with us to orientation to get the credit?

ebaymom,

Based on the IU English Department website, an AP score of 4 exempts your son completely from W131. I think you need to arrange to have the score sent by the testing company, just like you send an ACT or SAT score. I would do this ASAP so it has time to be entered into your son’s IU file before he goes for orientation/registration.

Just to be sure, it sounds like I have to take a math placement test? I know some colleges just put you into calculus depending on your ACT subscore in math so I was really hoping that I wouldn’t have to take another test.

^^ Yes, you have to take the test.

While Checking on Onestart => My Academic and Grades => Test Credit

Due to my English ACT score (33), I am exempt from Eng-W 131.

Also, due to my Math score (29), I am exempt from Math-M 199.

What course is Math-M 199?

…

Funployee, you might consider taking the SAT and getting a 660 or higher on the writing portion; this would give you two credit hours for W143. It costs about $50 to take the SAT, but two credits at IU for out-of-state would be about $1,400. Just call the English Department after IU receives the SAT scores and the two credits will show up in Onestart a few days after you call.

From the COAS bulletin:

Exemption with credit. Some students have an opportunity to receive College of Arts and Sciences credit. A student will be granted 2 credit hours of English W143 if the student has:

a score of 670 or above on the SAT Critical Reading test, or 32 or above on the ACT English Composition section, or 4 to 5 on the Advanced Placement English Composition section, plus

a score of 660 or higher on the SAT Writing Test, and if the student applies to the Department of English in Ballantine Hall 442. Students should also see “Special Note” under “Credit by Examination” in this Bulletin.

What course is Math-M 199?

You don’t get math credit for it.
I think that just means that you are eligible to take one-hundred level math classes. Some people have to take classes like M025 and M027 before they can take one-hundred level classes like M118 and M119.

my onestart also says that i’m exempt from eng w131, but no credit is appearing for 143w. i’ve gotten a 5 on AP lang, 35 on ACT english, and 720 SAT writing section. I’m a DA at Kelley, would I be eligible for this credit? any way to save money is important as i’m OOS.

I’m pretty sure this is the number to call: 812-855-1430.
[Indiana University Department Of English](http://www.iub.edu/~engweb/English-Composition-Undergraduate.php)

I called for my son about a few weeks after he started at IU in Fall 2008. He had actually taken W131 in high school in Indiana and got credit for it before he started at Bloomington last fall. You might have to have paid something on tuition or have enrolled to get them to put the credits on your transcript. Anyway, do it early in the Fall semester or call and ask them about it now, as W143 will also add two credit hours to your total and get you a slightly earlier registration time (registration times are assigned based on amount of college credit) for the Spring 2010 semester, so do it before the hours are totaled for your assigned Spring 2010 registration time. You definitely won’t get the credit unless you call and ask for it.
