To ask or read on lots of things UT oriented.

I think texdad has the right idea...I didn't mean to be so biased in my advice. Where to go to college is an intensely personal decision and my enthusiastic opinion just reflects that I'm confident in my own decision. I think I was trying to stress that nobody should feel like they're "settling". Between the two schools that confuseddad mentioned, I don't think you can make a wrong choice.

Anyone signed up for orientation in July?

yes, I have, July 5 -8 I think

I'll be there from June 28 to July 1.

I hope this link works, I though it was kind of a cute story.

Is Plan II like a major or a program?

Both. If you're accepted into the Plan II program then you ae majoring in Plan II. Some info from the Plan II website:

Plan II is a selective four-year interdisciplinary arts and sciences major that leads from a broad and strenuous core curriculum in the early college years to a student's own choice of coursework in the later ones. Classes are pitched at a level to challenge students entering from the top 5% of their graduating class and with average combined SAT scores well over 1400. The Plan II major consists of a core curriculum including humanities, social sciences, fine arts and natural sciences, with the result that Plan II graduates have a fine general education on topics ranging from Greek Philosophy and world literature to quantum mechanics and the structure of DNA. In the end, their research and writing skills are put to the test in an exacting senior thesis requirement. Although the Plan II major consists of a general core curriculum, many Plan II students specialize by using their electives to complete the equivalent of a second major in a particular subject area. Each year a number of students complete the premed curriculum in conjunction with their Plan II major, while others earn second degrees in such areas as business, engineering, English, and architecture.

Although Plan II a strong history of great applicants and wonderful students, this year we received a large number of applications from very highly-qualified applicants. The quality of our applicants reached a level that surprised us—setting up a competition that left us breathless. For the fall 2004 cycle, we found we had to deny 18 valedictorians (most of those are from very large and well-known high schools), 57 denied applicants were ranked #1--#5 in their graduating class and another 34 applicants with combined SAT I scores of 1500 or higher were denied.

Looks pretty hardcore to get in. How did everyone else get into there?

My guess is that besides good stats and extracurriculars, most of them wrote very good essays. When we went to visit the Plan II office, one of the people working in the office said that d should put a LOT of effort into the essay because that could make or break the application even if all her other stats were good.

yea, my essays took me forever to write but looks like the hard work paid off in the end.

Islandmom, I have to agree that the essays are probably what gave me the edge. My SAT score is right on the entering class average. Heck, I have no National Merit recognition at all, and something like 78% of Plan II students do.

I was wondering how many CCer's were going to UTAustin PlanII. Here's who I think was accepted so far. If you're going and you're not on the list you could add your name if you'd like.

My daughter will be in Plan I (Liberal Arts Honors), but one of her suitemates will be in Plan II AND Business Honors. Sounds like that suitemate won't be getting into too much trouble.

hmm, so what's the difference btw plan I and plan II then?
