Planning to pursue Master of Science in Management (MiM). Need help

Hi guys,

This is my first post in College Confidential. I just completed my Bsc. and I am planning to study Master of Science in Management. I did some research and found out ASU has a full time 9 month course. I have a couple of questions regarding this course.

Is it worth investing 33k for Master of Science in Management. What are the immediate job prospects?

I am an International student and I want to work in the United States after my studies. Can you give me a rough idea of the salary range?

Is there any other collage apart from ASU where I should study this course.

Note: My graduation degree is Bsc. in Multimedia and Animation and I am moving to this stream because I saw that I can handle online projects quite well and my career councilor suggested me to go with management courses.

First, I will try to help you as much as I can but I don’t know a lot of information about the master’s in management. Second, my guess would be that you should get some real world experience before you pursue this degree because most smart executives will not put someone who has a management degree right into management without any applicable experience to speak of. But once you get some experience (2-5years), depending how much and what industry, you can expect between 60-100k depending on what you do, what company, etc.

“1. Is it worth investing 33k for Master of Science in Management. What are the immediate job prospects?”

Good God, no. I wouldn’t spend $20 on it. If I’m in upper management, am I supposed to believe this degree is supposed to make you qualified to manage people, more so than someone who has years of experience in the field, actually, you know, MANAGING? Or at the very least, actually working with people?

It absolutely astonishes me that people believe that having a degree in management, or business administration or what have you, makes them qualified to manage people when they haven’t even started a career or led a team a day in their life. It is the biggest scam in our education, next to low ranked law schools that make perspective students believe they will actually be employed after it.

Thanks for the reply. Their course curriculum says that the masters degree is designed for people with no work experience. I am sharing the link to their degree program page.

My biggest concern is that even if I complete this 9 month degree, I need to take a huge student loan and if I don’t find any job and (worst case) return to my country then it would become a huge problem for me to repay it. Just like other aspiring international students, I too want to study in the States. Could you kindly give me so info about this course and whether there are other courses that have a better job prospect.

thanks domrom1 for the information. I am from multimedia background and I have 1 year work experience as marketing head for an e-commerce startup. I am really fixed between a couple of streams like Management, Computer Science, Information Studies etc.
