Plans for new Dodge Media Arts Center and new Center for Science and Technology!!!

Students in the digital arts department will soon have their own place to draw, edit and animate. Plans for the Dodge Media Arts Center, located off of Cypress Street and Maple Avenue, were unveiled Friday at President Jim Doti’s State of the University Address.

The site was originally going to be home to the Filmmakers’ Village, a housing complex for Dodge College of Film and Media Arts students.

This complex will be housed inside a restored and renovated historic building. While tampering with the physical structure of the building is prohibited, plans are to completely change the inside of the building into something that serves the needs of the students using it, said Bill Kroyer, director of the digital arts department.“This old, dreary black and white [building] all of a sudden turns into amazing technicolor when Chapman University gets involved,” Doti said.

The facility will include an animation room and studio, an art studio, labs and classrooms, an outdoor patio with food services, gathering spaces to network and lockers and recharging stations throughout the building for students to safely store away their art supplies.

Students are also excited to have a dining option at the digital arts building, something that does not currently exist at Dodge College.

Kroyer said the projected completion date is unknown because things are still being worked out with the City of Orange, but he is hoping it will be done in about a year.

Doti also announced detailed plans for the Center for Science and Technology, located on the current site of the Argyros Forum parking lot and tennis courts, during his address.

Doti elaborates on campus expansion | The Panther Online

^Our son, a freshman digital arts major, is over the moon about the new animation studio building. They are working on the remodel already, in a beautiful historic building next to Dodge.
It will be state of the art. :)

gladiatorbird, my daughter got into Chapman digital arts but not USC, which was her first choice. Anything you could say about Chapman’s digital arts program that would make her more excited to go there would be greatly appreciated. We really liked the school and the campus and I’ve heard nothing but positive things about the department, but she just had USC stuck in her head and I want her to see that she is better off (I am certainly happier to have her in Orange than in South Central LA)

@Smother I saw the news. I was shocked because I was under the impression applicants had to show interest and passion for animation and not get in because the parent forced them to apply. That really made me think twice. It’s bad enough my daughter has been in high school animation for 4 years with hardly anyone taking the class because they want to or want to be an animator. She wants to be with passionate animators, those who who love doing what they are doing. What I liked about Chapman’s supplemental application prompts is they KNOW with certainty who is dedicated, who wants to work as a team and who loves this art form.

I am/was like you thinking that Chapman is still new…but reading about Chapman having more interns made me take pause. Further, every day my daughter is also concerned with S. Central LA, drugs in dorms and getting shot. I can thank her ex cop grandpa for that fear. She’s Canadian born so this is a cultural thing too. I think I’d feel safer with her riding a cruiser bike to the Orange Circle. Plus Disneyland is close and she can use her annual pass. She has her Panther for a day set up, and I’m going with her to preview day. Anyway hopefully everyone will be happy with their decision in the end.

Thanks for the support. My daughter’s name is Julie by the way. She is also going to Preview Day so maybe they can meet. I have to take her twin sister to visit Cal Poly San Luis Obispo the same day so her dad will be bringing her to Preview Day. I visited Chapman with her and we got a private tour of Dodge from someone in the program and we both really loved it. Her art teacher is a professor there. I think the hard thing for her is that she has always been a high achiever and worked so hard and she just assumed that would pay off with the top school. Her ego is bruised. Everyone who goes to Dodge for digital arts that I’ve talked to loves it so I know she will too if she just lets the USC dream go.

Well you have been very kind to my daughter Erin during all this as well. We’ve done this whole CC thing together so I just know that she will make the right decision whatever school is best for her. I’m sure Gladiator will fill us in on all the reasons her son chose Dodge over SCA and has never looked back. I’m sure Erin will chime in later tonight.

PS it’s funny how we watch vicariously on CC others post, their excitement and disappointment. Soon as you posted on USC about getting the envelope I texted Erin all excited that Julie got in. Then we got sad with the bait and switch :-/

I’m going to actually do work tomorrow…today was wasted freaking out over all the USC connect stuff I didn’t get a thing done.

I totally didn’t realize you were Erin’s mom. How funny! I just saw that post about the kid who got in who didn’t really want to go but his dad made him apply. He must be quite an artist if he can just casually create a portfolio and get one of 11 spots. Makes me mad that he doesn’t even want it! We are going to call the digital arts department tomorrow just to verify that there isn’t a waiting list and then we are going to start registering for Chapman. Housing apps came out already so we need to choose a preference. We saw one of the triples and it seemed a bit claustrophobic to me. There is only one building with doubles but it is older. I guess she’ll have to do some thinking.

Can I say that “we” asked our daughter to put Chapman on the list. She has had USC stuck in her head since sophomore year. But I know an Adcom at CalArts who gave my daughter a tour, realized she’s interested in producing and management and recommended Dodge. That was prophetic. Everything we read about the program reinforces that recommendation - hands on, small classes, motivated faculty, many with industry experience. D commented that she thought the application was one of the only ones that asked questions about what she liked (i.e questions like what’s your guilty pleasure) and attempted to get to know her as a person. She’s thrilled to be admitted.

So it looks like, if all goes well, we’ll all have daughters in the school. We’re going to Campus Preview but I don’t advertise my D’s name on public boards. But maybe we can PM and meet up and say hello?

I have family in LA so USC would be convenient, but I do agree that there is something appealing about her biking in Orange in a smaller environment.

As for “ego bruised”, we don’t have our USC decision yet, but really - honestly - even a waitlist or decline is not a reflection on the student. It’s because our children are applying to programs that only take a dozen or few dozen candidates. USC’s admit rate at SCA is 5%. And from what I can tell, at Chapman students are hands-on from day one, but at SCA they’re taking a lot of general ed, and begin immersing in junior year. That is kind of a turn-off for D and why she bypassed other schools.

Sometimes the universe takes away what we want, in order to replace it with the better option that we need. Tell her to look at how FEW students are admitted to Dodge which is now ranked 9th on the Hollywood Insiders list. Sometimes better to be a big fish in a small pond, then a small fish in a pond where you’re constantly fighting to be noticed.

IMHO. See you on Campus Preview Day? (I’ve never seen the campus). We’re staying over to tour Dodge the following Monday.

Hi Smother and others:
I’m happy to share what I know about the Digital Arts major at Dodge based on DS’s freshman experience this year. Sorry to hear about your D’s news from USC. I wasnt quite following it based on the conversation here, but saw elsewhere that she was accepted to USC generally, but not into SCA for her chosen major (DA). It must have been very tough for her to get that one-two punch. But she is accepted to Chapman’s increasingly competitive DA/animation major and that’s wonderful! It has many things to recommend it. USC SCA is no doubt amazing, but our son is glad to be in the Dodge program, for very specific reasons. He was accepted to USC’s Digital Arts, by the way, but followed his heart (and the merit scholarship!) to Dodge in fall, 2012.

I don’t have time to list all the reasons he prefers Dodge, but I’ll mention a few and perhaps add more a bit later. (Please feel free to PM me, also.)

1) At Dodge, the kids dive into their major in week one. As a freshman, DS has already begun animating, story-boarding, collaborating and making films (with other students and a couple of shorts on his own). At USC, the first two years are largely GE coursework and there’s less opportunity to dive into the DA work until much later. When son spent the day with DA students at the USC admitted students event last year, only the senior student had work product to show. This troubled my son, because–like your D–he’d already been animating through four years of high school. At Dodge, in contrast, all the DA and film kids are working in their areas from day one. My son has been fully immersed and doing the work he loves since the start of freshman year.

2) Dodge has an intensive, hands-on program with very engaged faculty. The personal attention, intimacy and energy in the DA program is just great. In addition to being on a first-name basis with great professors (who have strong, active industry connections), DS is involved in the Digital Arts Club–and that opens up even more opportunities for meeting people and making connections.

3) Industry connections. USC is of course known for this. But we’ve seen this year that Dodge has great connections, too. And the DA dept shows great commitment to getting their students exposed and ‘out there.’ For example, at Dodge, DS (who is only a freshman, mind you) has met and talked with Andrew Stanton (Pixar genius and Oscar winning animator/director behind Wall-E, Toy Story, Finding Nemo, A Bug’s Life) and Rob Minkoff (director of Lion King). Mr Minkoff even drew a picture of Roger Rabbit and gave it to DS, LOL. Last week, son went out to dinner with: Rich Moore and Jim Reardon (legendary story-tellers and award-winning animators known for Wreck-it Ralph, Wall-E, the Simpsons). Yes, he had dinner with them, along with another DA student and Bill Kroyer (his Dodge DA professor, known for Fern Gully and Tron). Dodge has the industry connections. We are delighted, as is DS. The kids get internships at the major studios in LA. Dodge interns are becoming known as some of the best around. And, as a poster in the digital arts/media industry alluded to on your USC thread, Dodge interns are popular and becoming sought after. I think this has to do with the experience base they have as a result of starting their major studies early.

DS’s only complaint, so far–if you can call it that–is that he thinks they could “drive the kids harder” in the year-long foundational life drawing coursework. He thinks they should draw for hours and hours and hours (like the CalArts kids). He probably has a point and I believe the program has been actively strengthening its foundation coursework in recent years. USC is not stronger than Dodge in this regard–at least that’s DS’s impression from talking to USC DA majors.

The DA major has become very competitive at Dodge and it’s great that your D has it as an option. Bill Kroyer has been quoted to say that his goal is to build the “best DA program in the world.” They are very attuned to industry needs and work hard to align the coursework and program to those high standards and changing demands. Well… I’m out of lunch hour now, but could say more great things about the DA major at Dodge. Son doesn’t regret saying ‘no’ to USC (though its a great school–goes without saying). But the fit, energy and immediate immersion he’s had at Dodge is much more to his liking.

I may start a thread just for DA majors here so that the information is easier to find. Last year, there was very little specific information about the various programs available and I think it could be quite helpful for future prospective students.

Best of luck to your D, smothers. :)

Thanks so much for the info! I had heard that USC students don’t start animating right away too. I think she was afraid of not getting connections, but that list you gave of the people your son has met so far is quite impressive! Her art instructor is Sheldon Borenstein, who teaches at Chapman. She has heard from him that Dodge does more drawing than USC and she is happy about that. I think she is starting to get excited about Chapman now that the USC shock has worn off. I am happy that she will be in a safer neighborhood, although it looks like I will have to buy her a season pass to Disneyland.

Oh my gosh, our son LOVES Sheldon!!! He is a phenomenal teacher and DS can’t get enough of him. That’s why he says he wants more, more, MORE drawing. :)

I think your D will love Chapman and thrive there, if she chooses to go.

Here’s a thread with some additional detailed information about the digital arts major. This was the kind of specific, insider-view information DS was hungry for last year and found very helpful. You can see here, too, that Dodge has and continues to grow solid industry connections.

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/chapman-university/1312909-animation-digital-arts-chapman-great-inside-view.html</a></p>

Now I’ve been rejected from USC - I’m happy to fully embrace Chapman. It always felt like the right school to me! Happy to be back there for Panther for a Day soon.

And I’m super excited to meet and work with your daughter, Smother!

Welcome, erinconony. :)

Thanks for the additional information-- I think E and I are relieved that the news from USC is out for her, and the jury reached its verdict. I know she was anxious about fitting in at USC but LOVED Chapman so its Chapman for sure. I love our mailman–when I pulled out of the driveway and saw him with the mail–asked if there was anything from USC. We both saw the small white envelope and he exclaimed loudly, “Oh *****” LOL then said–hey she’s in Chapman, and if I had a daughter I would send her there too. Its all good we are happy. She wants a bike with a big basket (that won’t get stolen).

This thread is so reaffirming. Looking forward to our visit in a few weeks. :)

Erin, I am glad you are taking the USC rejection so well. Chapman is sounding better and better with all the posts I have been reading here. I will tell Julie to look for you at Preview Day. Are you on that Facebook page of admitted students? I know she was looking at it earlier today.

Exie I agree it is reaffirming because this whole college application ordeal has been stressful! Later I can PM you and exchange emails or whatnot seeing that I won’t have mommawhalie as a name tag

It also helps having the experienced Dodge parents post information for us. Thanks everyone.

I don’t have a Facebook (at least, not yet) I’ll tell you if/when I get one, though.

Oh, for getting her a Disneyland pass - Chapman has discount tickets and passes! You just need your Chapman log in. It’s AWESOME.

Do I order them online or do we have to do it on the campus somewhere?
