Plans for Taking the SAT

Here's my plan for taking the SAT:

First time: Jan of sophomore year
Second time: Fall of junior year (if needed)
Third time: Spring of junior year (if needed)

What do you guys think? Too early? Too late? Just right?
I also plan to take the PSAT for practice fall of sophomore year, and again during junior year.
I've taken practice SAT tests before and scored within the range of somewhere from 2000-23something. On my last practice test I only missed one math question and scored somewhere between 680-750 in Writing and CR. Thus, I believe it would be good to take the SAT once sophomore year.

I'd like some input though. Thanks. :)

2000+ On the SAT is a laudable achievement, so if any score above 2000 is good enough for you, go ahead and take it. However, if you're shooting to get into some of the higher tier schools, you're going to want at least a 2100 or 2250 for the really competitive ones. Obviously a lot more goes into a decision then your SAT score, so I'm not saying if you dont get above a 2000 you won't get into Harvard, but a 2250 definitely looks better. This fact, along with the fact that you shouldn't take the SAT more than 3 times, and you're bound to due better the older you are, leads me to believe you shouldn't take it January of Sophomore year. Summer between junior and senior year, or any summer for that matter gives you ample time to study, so maybe you want to take it the spring of junior year and the fall of senior year? That's what I'm doing. Obviously you might not want to study over the summer, so if you have enough time on your hands to study during your junior year between fall and spring, go ahead and do that. Just my two cents.

I was thinking of doing it during my sophomore year too, but in the end I decided to wait until fall of junior year. I knew I wanted more time to study, so I've been using this summer (between soph/junior) to do a ton of practice tests.

I can't really think of any compelling reason to take the SAT before junior year, but if you really want to, go ahead. But you will be taking the PSAT, so if you just want to know what kind of SAT score you can expect, that might satisfy your curiosity.

We meet again, Comisar.

haha, hi :)

I agree. Performance on the SAT has a lot to do with mental maturity (which explains why after a year some people increase by a lot without any prep) so I see no reason for you to take it in January of your sophomore year. Use the summer between your sophomore and junior years to study, and then take the SAT in the Fall if you think your score might be high enough. I would still take the PSAT in the Fall though, because it's good practice.

You definitely should not take it sophomore year since SAT has some sort of a curve, which means you will be competeing againist people who had much more experience and practice than you had. I wanted to take it in oct. this year, but now i changed it to jan. because even thou I had a lot of practice, i don't want to compete with someone who had more time to study than me. And i'm a junior. I'm aiming pretty high, and i hate retaking things because i don't have a lot of spare time to study so.......it's really ur choice, but unless u feel absolutely confident, don't take it so early.:)
