Play: What are my chances?

White male from Florida, junior
GPA 3.9 weighted
SAT 800 Reading/700 Math/760 Writing
(retook SAT to increase Math, think I did)
SATII - tbd - Am. History and Literature

Jazz Band - 9.10,11
Water Polo - 9,10,11
National Merit Finalist
Chess Club - Treasurer, 11th
Placed 21 at USCF Tourny 2006, team placed 4th
English Honor Society
Best Buddies Community Service - volunteer at summer camp 2 years
Won Photo contest several years at my high school

What do you think my % chances might be ED?

How are you a NMFinalist if you're a junior?

Are these SAT scores terrible?

SAT I: Verbal - 710, Math - 690, Writing - 690

SAT IIs: U.S. History - 710, Literature - 690, Math Level I - 690

Finalist I guess is the wrong term. I scored high enough to be in 'that grouping' that can become a finalist. I scored a 217. I am anticipating atleast semi finalist.

Blunt honesty on the question "what are my chances at Amherst"...but my next first choice (Amherst may be too high a reach) is Wesleyan.

whats your unweighted gpa? financial aid? race? SAT wise you are fine.

My unweighted GPA 3.6 (just by a hair), white male, no financial aide

You are within the ballpark (in line w/ stats), but Amherst is a stretch for everyone. No FA will be a plus, and possibly being a male, depending on if the numbers shift at all for next year, as they have for many other schools. But you need to make yourself stand out from the pack, as numbers of applicants increase each year. There are no interviews, so your essays are crucial. Give them your best. Good luck to you!

3.6 is a lil on the low side.
but it's march. why are you worrying now?
just sit back and wait for the decision.

Amherst doesn't look at financial aid for domestics.

Bobow he's a junior now.

That 3.6 is hurting you man. Step your game up. Show great 2nd semester grades and senior year grades to make up for it. Write a great essay. Retake your SATs, this is pure guesswork, but I'm guessing that Amherst will look down at the 100 point difference between math and verbal. You're obviously a strong humanities candidate, but there's no harm in brushing up your math/sci. Your lack of serious ECs may hurt you a little. Suggest you continue winning those photo contests, and send slides to Amherst when you apply.

47.63% Chance of Getting In.

No, I think it's more like a 47.76% >.<
