Things that might get counted against me:
-NO AP's or honors so far (I'm going to try to get as many as I can for my senior year, and I might do dual enrollment).
-I've been to 2 different high schools in three years, not because of discipline problems, but because of my mom's inability to pay for Catholic school (I went to Catholic school grades 9 and 11).

Reason for my low freshman year grades:
I was educated in the academically WORST school district in PA. Going from the worst school district to a challenging Catholic high school was a challenge to me, but I eventually adjusted. Now I have finished my junior year off with a superior 3.6 GPA!

How would my chances improve if I raised my SAT score to at least a 1700 or 1800? Also, what if I filled my course load with all AP classes this year (or possibly dual enrollment)? Oh yeah, and GO PHILLIES!

I assume you’re coming from Chester. Congratulations on all you’ve managed to accomplish.

Have you considered the HBCU schools? A friend is a professor; his field is higher education, particularly HBCUs. He says he has seen data showing that these schools achieve better-than-predicted results with students whose entrance statistics are not so impressive. You’ve proved that you’ll work hard. A supportive school with teachers who really want to be teachers (not researchers) would offer you a great deal more than a large university would.

Wow, how did you know? I actually don’t live there, but where I live is in their district. I attended school there from grades 1-8, and then again during my sophomore year. My freshman, junior, and now senior years have been are are currently being spent at a Catholic HS in Delco.

I’m kind of on the brink of considering Howard and maybe Morgan State, but that’s all. HBCU’s haven’t really been that big on my list because: 1. I do like a big university setting and HBCU’s haven’t really offered me that, and 2. They don’t offer much diversity. I have friends from all walks of life at the Catholic HS I attend, and that’s what I would prefer in a college.

Thanks for responding!

Bumppppppp

the academically WORST school district in PA

If you’d focused on an individual school, it would have been ambiguous, but an entire district made it obvious.

Until you get your SAT scores up, I’m not sure Temple actually is a safety. As I’m sure you know, there are a number of small Catholic colleges in the area that should welcome someone like you. (I realize you may prefer a larger school.) Have you thought of using Delco Community as an absolute safety? And have you looked at the list of test-optional colleges?

Are you recruitable for baseball?
