Please chance for Top Publics and some Privates? Will chance back.

Hey guys! So I guess being a rising senior I'd like to get an idea for where I stand getting into some of these colleges. I apologize in advance for this being somewhat long, it's hard to contain my high school career in this one thread :)

BASIC INFO:

Location: Washington
School: Public, top 50 HS that sends several students to top-10 schools perenially
Gender: Male
Family Income:not enough to require much FA
Race: Chinese-American
Hooks: nothing, my mom didn't finish college but my dad got his PhD at UBC

Colleges:
Privates: UPenn, Cornell, Duke, Chicago, USC, NYU
Publics: U Washington, Michigan, UC Berkeley, UCLA, UVA

Intended major: Business or Economics in all likelihood.

my first thought is that some of these will be matches with the upper privates being reaches.

STATS:

GPA: 3.87 UW, not sure of Weighted
Class Rank: top 9% of ~450 students.
SAT: 650 CR, 680 M, 800 W: 2130, but this was without studying and I should probably get 2200+ next time

Subject Tests: 730 World History, 770 Math II
PSAT: 219, should be able to get NMSF

AP's:
Soph: AP World (5)
Junior (scores projected): AP US History (5) AP Lang (5) AP Calculus (5) AP Psychology (5) AP Physics (3)- :D I failed...

Senior year, I plan to take AP Comp Gov, AP Gov, AP Micro, AP Macro, AP Eniviro Sci, AP Calc BC, AP English Lit, AP Art History.

The Gov and Econ are shoved into 1 semester each (so 2 full-year classes of Gov/Compgov and Econ) and the counselor says my schedule is most rigorous.

EXTRACURRICULARS:

Clubs/Leadership:
Key Club: 9,10,11,12- highly active member and VP next year.
Chess Club: 11, 12- co-founder and President/Captain (awards listed below)
Astronomy Club: 9,10,11,12- President (11,12). I'll be getting rec from advisor (AP Physics) and he knows my passion for Astronomy very well in addition to my leadership.
National Honor Society: 11, 12- nothing much, just your standard NHS member.
Senior Class Officer- I ran and won without making a speech as I was gone for DECA Nationals, and my counselor talked to me about how it reflects well on my reputation and standing with my peers (he'll put on rec too)

Sports:
Football- Freshman year, I've been working out a lot and may be back for senior year (Varsity)!
Track- 9,11,12: JV 9,11; should be Varsity for senior year. I'm the most injury prone athlete on the planet :(

Sportswriting:
Sportswriting is a big part of my application. I found my passion for it from some forum friends and it took off from there my Sophomore year. I cover seattle sports for an up and coming website and am a featured writer for a sports website that gains immense traffic, and have been syndicated to many news websites (USA Today and CBSsports.com for example). I also did some guest pieces for our school newspaper last year, which I will be participating in full time this year (although not editor)

Volunteering:
(~400 Hrs. by the end of this summer)
not much of note, but the most meaningful will be volunteering on a rescue van this summer, going directly to the homeless on the streets of seattle, providing them with blankets, clothing, and nourishment! I'm honestly very excited.

I've also played piano for 13 years and it means a lot to me, but I only really play for fun/church now instead of competitions.

AWARDS:

Community Service Commendation award
DECA:
(9) AREA: 4th Place Sports & Entertainment Marketing
(11) AREA: 2nd Place Sports & Entertainment Marketing
(11) STATE: 4th Place Sports & Entertainment Marketing
(11) STATE: 5th Place International Business Plan (taking a restaurant chain to China)
-both state categories I made it to Internationals!
CHESS:
Our team placed 2nd in regionals, which was impressive since our school hadn't had a chess team in a decade
And in state, we placed 6th overall out of about 40 teams in the state.
Sportswriting:
My writing ability was in a sense validated when I won a Gold Key in the Scholastic Writing Competition in Region-at-Large in Journalism; it was a piece that was a tribute to Dave Niehaus, a legendary Mariners broadcaster who passed away last year.

WORK EXPERIENCE:

June-December 2010: Marketing Intern at one of the largest non-profits in Seattle, helping to design their campaigns and manage financial stuff.

I will be getting either a grunt job (grocery store, retail, fast food) or an internship as a Marketing Intern at Microsoft, which I will likely get.

My essays should be pretty good and recs as well. The rec's will portray me as a unique and outgoing student who is a leader, and my essay does well in displaying me as a unique (un-asian) individual- I talked about my experience in freshman football

My main focus is my unique interests in sports marketing/management, which my marketing teacher will talk about, and passion for sportswriting which was validated by winning the scholastic writing award. From a distance, I think I appear to be different from the stereotypical asian candidate which I hope will help a bit.

Thank you so much for chancing me! I would be happy to chance you back. :)

Bump! I’m projecting my SAT to be in the low-mid 220’s with ~2300 superscore, so understand that my score will be a lot higher when I apply! :D

The ECs are great, however, the gpa is a little low for the top schools on the list. If you have an upward trend, it, might offset a little. You should be fine for the public schools, USC and NYU. The rest would be slight reaches mainly b/c of gpa/class rank. Keep it up senior year. It’s a plus that your activities aren’t stereotypically asian as you do the sports writing and football, etc.

thanks d blazer. the GPA will hurt me a bit; my freshman year i got 3 B’s, soph none, and junior either 2 or 3 B’s. I don’t expect to get into Penn even applying ED, but I’m realistically expecting to get into the business program for the matches (or economics if they don’t have bus program)

Wharton is a reach for anybody, even ED.
Cornell, low reach
Duke, reach
Chicago, low reach
USC, match
NYU match
U Washington, (STL?) match
Michigan, high match
UC Berkeley, low reach/high match
UCLA, in
UVA low reach/high match

Are you re-taking math II? considering 10-15% get an 800, I might think about trying to take it again to get that? maybe not though

I was somewhat thinking about WUSTL but I don’t think their business program is very strong, it’s University of Washington- Seattle - state school, makes most sense financially for me as I’m in state but I don’t want to go there. It’s just a last-ditch safety school pretty much! I will probably take SAT’s again in October, then Nov. for SAT II’s or if I don’t score well enough then I’ll take SAT one last time (it’s more important than subject at this point). I’m projecting 770-780 which shouldn’t be too bad, but again if I get a 2200+ I may think about doing subjects for November. I don’t know if it would be in time for early apps though.

If you have scores directly sent to the school from CB ie. Select while taking the test to send the scores to the schools applying to, you can take them in November

Yeah, I think that’s what I’ll do. Either way I have options for November. Best of luck to us! :D

Your scores are fine. You should also consider emory’s business program as well.

Chance me!

Bump …

:)

I think u have a solid chance at any of those schools! especially if u raise ur sat to a 2300. Just make sure that u can pull out some good grades first semester and ull be fine.
Chance me? (http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1162189-chance-me-ivys-will-chance-back.html</a>)

Yeah I really screwed up my GPA freshman year and I’m just trying my best while taking a very tough schedule. Will be studying very hard for the SAT’s over the summer!

bump… ;)

I think that you have a fantastic shot at any top school! You have many interests but it seems that you are passionate about all of them! Let that shine through and you should get many of your top choices :). We all know that he process is so random at his level, but I really think you’ll do great!
Chance me?
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/brown-university/1162622-i-love-brown-3-chances-some-scattered-ecs.html</a></p>

assuming a 2200+ SS with the retake, and accounting for the fact that i didn’t read the entirety of the novel you just posted:

UPenn,- mid/high reach
Cornell, mid reach
Duke, mid/high reach
Chicago, mid/high reach
USC, mid/high match
NYU mid/high match
U Washington don’t know
Michigan, mid/high match
UC Berkeley, high match to mid reach
UCLA, same as Cal
UVA same as UCLA and Cal

definitely apply to all of them

i’m sure you alreayd know safeties are a necessity too. not saying i dont think youll get in any of those places, everyone needs them
hope that helped

^sorry, lol I just find it tough to really get a good idea of how an adcom would actually look at an applicant without explaining everything.

Privates: UPenn, Cornell, Duke, Chicago, USC, NYU
Publics: U Washington, Michigan, UC Berkeley, UCLA, UVA
Id say your rank and GPA are a bit low for most of these colleges, but you should focus on your ECs in your essays to strengthen your application. I’d say UPenn, Cornell, Duke, and UChicago are all mid-high reaches. Washington is a high Match… However, USC, Michigan, Berkeley, UCLA, UVA and NYU are all matches.

Oh, and http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/college-admissions/1158244-chance-me-please.html</a></p>

Yeah, like I said before I screwed up my academics… not really happy with them, but I do project to have a good SAT score. Chanced :)

Late, but I think that you have a decent shot at all your schools. You might want to retake the SATs though.
