AP Spanish Language: 2 (I understand that this grade in Spanish is kind of like death to school like Yale, but I worked so hard for this class (semester grades are B+/B-) and the teacher loves me. While everyone else except for 2 kids cheated, I didn't. She wrote a recommendation letter for me, and while I can't see it, my guidance counselor says it is amazing).

Weighted: 5.55 (I understand that the weighted GPA is messed up, just look at the comment right below this one)

there is no such thing as ranks at my school o_o weird, i know. I do know that I am number 5 of 261 (just by talking with the top kids), and that of all the kids applying to Yale EA, I have the highest GPA.

EC:
My main thing is French horn. Besides being first in school band and what not, I received a superior rating on a solo at the state level of adjudication. I play principal horn in a local orchestra where I am the only person who is not an adult. Also, I have been the only horn player in the past two years from my state to attend Interlochen Arts Camp in Interlochen, Michigan (the best arts camp in the nation, in my opinion) either year. The second year I made it into the orchestra program [the highest program] and was the principal horn in one of the two orchestras). My horn teacher is writing me a letter of recommendation, as she has seen me grow both as a person and as a musician over the past few years.

In the tenth grade, I started a nonprofit. I refuse to say what it's called, as kids from my school will probably give me a hard time haha. Well, it's in honor of my cousin who has a pretty unknown yet very common learning disability/disorder, and we worked with an organization that deals with post-secondary school students with this and other similar learning disorder and tries to teach them how to live as close to a "normal," independent life as possible. After we worked with them for a while, we saw a flaw in the educational programs of public schools: the teachers educate in large classes without much emphasis on alternative learning. To try to fix that, we gave presentations at local elementary schools about the disorder itself (to educate) along with support strategies for special education. I'm the founder/president.

I was the co-president of my school's peer tutoring program, and we organized like 50 tutors and around 50 tutorees (I don't care if that's a word; I'm using it.) That's a big deal to me. I also tutor on my own.

I have been a member of my school's Mu Alpha Theta competition team since 9th grade. I won 5th place in the state, and was the team captain of the team that won 5th place in the state twice. In my junior year, the team I was on (not involved with my school) won a top 10 award in an international math competition. I have qualified for the AIME.

I have braved through three years of marching band, which I didn't like very much at all. But it was like (on average) 18 hours a week for about 12 weeks a year. I'm so glad I'm not doing it my senior year.

Freshman and sophomore year, I was the top fundraiser in my school for kids with cancer. I raised over $1000 each year on my own.

I am in my school's National Honor Society, and am a committee leader. I helped to organize some fundraisers.

I am really into food, and have cooked all throughout high school. I am going to be interning in a restaurant second semester as a chef to learn proper French technique. Woot for chopping vegetables!

Languages:
English: first language...obviously read, write, speak

Spanish (fluent: write, read, speak)

White Male

100% auto-in

Not 100% auto-in, but I think you stand a relatively strong chance. You’re definitely well in the mix, and as with most applicants, a lot will depend on your essays. The SAT writing score is not ideal, to say the least, and may hurt you a bit - but is less likely to do so if you knock out some fantastic essays. I am slightly confused as to how you can be “fluent” in Spanish, yet get a B+ in the class and a 2 on the AP. It may be a minor point, but make sure you aren’t exaggerating your ability - whether for college or later, you never know when an interviewer might suddenly switch over to Spanish to test your honesty. (I’ve heard of situations like this happening in job interviews.)

@tebow: Please don’t lie to yourself (:
@livorneo: she never prepared us for the exam at all. I got a B+/B- because we read don Quixote and ridiculously hard material each night.
I’m good enough to get along with people and live in a country just fine, but not ‘educated’ in the language enough to read/write research papers

Unless you’ve spent an extended period of time in a Spanish speaking country, I would be very hesitant to say you are fluent with just AP Spanish, no less with your grade and test score. JMO.

I honestly think you stand a good chance, depending on how you convey yourself in your essays. Your test scores are good, but not exceptional; your EC’s are also strong, but not enough on their own. If your passion comes across in thoughtful essays, I think you have reason to hope.

I appreciate all your support and advice. I changed my common app thing to only speaking spanish.
