SATs: 2170 (690 CR 720M 760Wr) - will take in June to get CR over 700
SAT IIs: US Hist 790 Bio 750 TWO BIG QUESTIONS HERE: She wants to be a Bio major should she retake Bio? Since the university requires 2 SAT IIs does it help to take any more?
Class Rank: top 5% - don't know exact # yet ( in a highly rated public HS in northern NJ, class of 350+)
Race: White
State: NJ (don't know if this helps since it doesn't seem like too many people from NJ attend)
Will probably have excellent recs from teachers as they all love her.

Any feedback will would soooo welcomed. If you know about music opportunities at Rice if one is not enrolled in the Sheppard School of Music please include that info also.

She’s looking good. Her 750 on bio is fine. No need to retake. You already have two SAT subject tests so you don’t have to take anymore. But if she wants to take one more, I’d recommend Math II.

Being from anywhere but Texas/the South helps. There’s the MOB (marching bad) and the Campanile orchestra for non-majors at Rice. (There are other ensembles but I don’t know them off the top of my head.)

Do an interview if possible. And work on the essays.

Good luck! She’s looking good.

^same
I’d say she has a competitive shot at merit money as well

great shot. Work on essays!!

They are usually the thing that kills the applicants, because they feel their stats are too good so they don’t write good essays and sound like someone who only applied to Rice because it was #17 rank (and they’d go if they don’t get into #1-16)… Or they have bad essays because they don’t think they have a shot at all and it was kind of a joke application

I agree with all the former posts. I definitely recommend an interview with an alumnus and a visit to Rice during the school year so it’s the right fit for her! She sounds like a talented young woman and a future Owl.

Thanks all for your great advice! We look forward to visiting Rice soon.

looks good. Just keep it up and ensure good recos and essays!

hey, I’m from north NJ too and I’m going to Rice next year. Your daughter has a very good shot. Yes, being from the northeast does help a little. A third SAT2 in math or lit would look good, but it’s not crucial. And a 750 in bio is totally fine, as long as she is consistently strong in science classes. Just work on your essays and maybe do an interview. The woman who does interviews around here is really interesting. (Apparently there are very few Rice alum in the area, so if she does an interview, she’ll probably get the same person as I did). I don’t know about merit aid though; I had similar stats and I didn’t get any… although I don’t have such an impressive music resume :)

good luck!
If you don’t mind me asking, what county are you from?

to answer the other question

“If you know about music opportunities at Rice if one is not enrolled in the Sheppard School of Music please include that info also.”

Marching Owl Band

The shephard school has classes even for non majors

form your own band…

Many musicals that need orchestras

Music clubs

every res. college has a piano in the common area

We are from Passaic County - where are you from?

My daughter isn’t a music major, but she uses the piano practice rooms at Shepherd. To be honest, the musical opportunities for non-majors seem a bit limited, but Rice is a small school. You won’t find the choices you’d find at large public schools. In addition to what’s already been mentioned, there are some musical theater possibilities (I think it was non-music majors that put on “West Side Story” this year). There are a couple of a capella groups, but I’m pretty sure both require auditioning. There are some choral opportunities.
