PLEASE CHANCE! kind of anxious :[ Georgetown, Upenn, Duke, Northwestern, UVA, McGill

Hello!

I'm a senior this year at a fairly decent public school and im applying to: Georgetown (EA), Upenn, Duke, UVA, Northwestern, McGill, and Elon

Caucasion Female
GPA: 4.25 W 3.9 UW
Class Rank: 1/240

SAT I: 710-CR 650-M and 670-W (Taking again in Oct)
SAT II: 530-Chem 720-US History (Taking Math II and English Lit in Nov)

4 AP's (2 Junior, 2 Senior) and all honors
(5 on US History)

ECs and Awards
Model UN 4 years - President
Foreign Language Club 4 years - President
School Newspaper 4 years - Editor
Peer Tutoring- 4 years
National Honors Society
AP Scholar
150 hours of community service at a horseback riding farm
*some others but i dont want to bore anyone :)

I would really appreciate feedbackk!!!!!! Sort of stressed so any advice is good! ill chancee backkk too if you would like.

Well, your GPA both W/UW are decent. If you're valedictorian, that's a plus, however your class is on the smaller side.

Your SAT scores are a bit weak. It's good that you're taking them again. The Chem SATII hurts. Hopefully your MathII and Eng. Lit scores are both above 700, that would be a really big boost.

The AP tests, what were the scores? Schools don't really put too much thought into them, but it's better if they're like 4s and 5s.

Your ECs show dedication. I'm assuming you weren't President/Editor for all 4 years of your EC, but for your senior year. However, your ECs are well, spread out, and I'm worrying that admissions will see that as breadth instead of depth.

Overall, I think your chances are good for your schools.

GTown: High Match/Low Reach
UPenn: Ditto.
Duke: Match/High Match
NWestern: Low Reach
UVA: Match/High Match
McGill: I don't know enough to say anything about this school.

thankss so muchh!! yeahh i took my SAT II for chem sophomore yearr because i was told, wrongly im assuming, that my scores don't have to be sent in if i choose. i had a horrible teacher and didnt learn anything so i really hope my other ones will offset it :[

Yep. You were told wrongly. Unfortunately. Since, it can't really be changed, and there's no where to really like explain that score. It would be terrible if that one score was the reason for denial.

I wouldn't worry about it. They're recommended, not required -- they're meant to help. Schools don't look for reasons to discount you -- it would take quite a bit more than one bad SATII score for that. That chem test is tough regardless of how well you're prepared. I don't care to speak individually about each school, because these days the admissions 'game' is so completely random it's hard telling. However, I can tell you that you've selected some very nice schools and I'll lose all faith in humanity if you don't get into at least one (and most likely more than one...) :).

Hi eri196!

Let's start out by going through your academics. You have obviously performed well in high school with your UW 3.9. Your GPA is made even more competitive with 4 APs and an all Honors courseload. For the more elite private schools you're applying to, I would say that the number of APs you have on hand is slightly below average - but that is okay. Your 5 on US History will likely earn you credit at most schools. Your SAT is decent at a 2030; however, for someone applying to the schools with as much prestige as yours, I do like to see a 2100+. Have this as your target when you retake in October. Generally, colleges aren't very fond of senior year SAT retakes, but in your case, if you do want to attend Northwestern, UPenn, or Duke, I do highly recommend a retake. Your SAT IIs are generally okay. As a rule, colleges like to see a 650+ on SAT Subjects, preferably a 700. I think that you should retake the Chemistry (a 520) if possible on the next SAT administration date. This way, you can show colleges that you may have had something going on that time you got a 520 or that you worked on your chemistry skills. For your English (which btw is the hardest SAT subject) and Math II, aim for a 650+. Your ECs are pretty good and demonstrate dedication and leadership in all areas. However, I feel that your ECs have too much of a spread and they don't really demonstrate something you're truly interested in. When you do write your EC essays for the Common App, try to tell colleges what you truly have passion for ... What is it that you would like to keep doing in college if you could because you loved it so much? Why did you like it so much? You know, things like that. Show that to them. If you were just trying to stuff your app ... they'll know. (They have satellite images keeping track of you ...JK!) For example, you may like Model UN because it allows you gain a global perspective on issues. If so, HOW do you get this feeling and WHY does it seem so appealing to you? (btw please don't copy and paste what I just wrote) ... Write about how you feel and be yourself!

However, I do like your volunteering at a horseback farm ... it's kinda unique ... (Perhaps in your EC essay you can write about horses!)

Other than that, I don't really see any honors or awards other than AP Scholar ... but that's okay!!

Overall, you are a pretty good student who - as far as I can tell- has worked pretty hard in HS. However, I do recommend doing a good job on your essays and working on your SATs in the upcoming months to boost your chances of admission.

Chances:
Georgetown: High match
UPenn: Reach (I'd say you would be safer with a slightly higher SAT and a more challenging curriculum)
Duke: Reach (ditto)
Northwestern: Slight reach (ditto again)
UVA: Match - chances are better for IOS
McGill: Match - admissions aren't overly difficult for US students

Good luck!
-ab2013

thanks so much ab2013 !! the advice was really helpful and i totally agree with you. unfortunately, my school only really offers 5 APs so i couldnt really take any more challenging courses. im hoping my guidance councelor mentions that in her rec. thanks againn for all your help :)

Georgetown: High match
UPenn: Reach
Duke: Reach
Northwestern: Slight reach
UVA: Match
McGill: Match

Good luck!

CHance me back??http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/560692-northwestern-umichigan-john-hopkins-chance-me-please-ill-chance-u-4.html

thankk youu. bump ?

I disagree with the comments about spread out ECs.

OP has all four years for each of the 4 ECs. President/Editor (Leadership) of two solid ECs. "Spread out" to me implies several more ECs, with nothing showing all 4 years.

As to chances, it will be important to get over 2100... that is a psychological barrier for some. If you do, then any top 15 school will be a slight reach (Penn, Duke, NU). If not, then a true reach. The others are matches (UVA (though I don't know how tough it is if you are OOS), Georgetown, others).

thankk you, anymore feedbackk? bump

bumpbumpbump

You have a 60/40 chance at Georgetown depending on what school you are applying to, SFS, college, MSB, or nursing. Your numbers are average, SAT is a little bit low, the CHEM SAT II will hurt you. You have great credentials, definitely extraordinary. Your essay will be crucial and your application really ought to highlight your personality and passion.

I cannot stress enough how much Georgetown cares about the individual and what makes him/her different from others. Why Georgetown will be a question you ought to mull over, your interviewer will likely ask it. Do not mention DC as a location (a big no no). For those who say you are a high match for Georgetown, I would like to agree, but again, it depends on which school and how your essay develops. The reason GU does more than a common application is because the average applicant has similar numbers/extra curricular. It will be the unique things about you that make or break your application.

yess i completelyy agree..that chem sat II is hauntingg mee..i took it sophomore yearr, knowing that it was not my strongest subject or area of interest, and was told that SAT II's are optional to send in to college. I hope that by taking two other SAT II's georgetown will just look at the top 3.

I'm applying to MSB and i'm going to put the most effort into this application becausee georgetown is my dream college and theres no place id rather be!!!

anyoneee elseee :) ??? bump

hmmm pleaseee?? :(

bump bump bump

Solid ECs, 1360 M+C SAT, VAl

It looks all good. Only thing that kind of sticks out is your Chem SAT2? I think taking others would cover that up.

Georgetown: Low Reach (definitely high match with better scores though)
UPenn: Reach (its an Ivy...)
Duke: Reach (heard it cares about scores a lot)
Northwestern: Low Reach
Elon: In....

Can you chance me?
