I am currently in my junior year of high school. I am enrolled in a full AP schedule. Although I have not yet taken the SAT or ACT, I scored a 1300 on the PSAT (without any preparation or knowledge of the math). My weighted GPA is around a 4.3. I’m on track to receive an AP Capstone diploma and I am on the tennis team as well as in the key club. I also own my own small but successful baking business. I am extremely determined and hope to study PreMed and eventually become a surgeon. Thanks so much!!!
Chances are if you’re premed you’ll go to med school and find employment somewhere in the general vicinity of your undergad school. Boston has some of the best med schools and hospitals in the country. But beware, if you’re not from somewhere that has real winters you’re going to freeze you a$$ off in New England.
Are you in-state for UNC? Because it has a quota for out of state students, UNC can be a reach for many out of state students even with solid stats. What’s your unweighted GPA? A 4.3 weighted looks solid for both schools. With a 1450 or higher on the SAT, I would give you a decent shot at both schools. However, BU is 70k a year. Are your parents willing to spend that much money for just pre-med?
Out of state. My school only provides my weighted GPA so I am not quite sure what my unweighted is. All would most likely depend on scholarships. I’m also interested in Clemson and UF Gainesville but I’m not sure how good their programs are. In the worst case I’d have to look into a SUNY but once again I don’t know much about their premed.
I would not count on scholarships for UNC… use the NPC to see if you might qualify for any FA. As noted above, there is an 18% cap for OOS students. Does your school have Naviance?
If you are considering medical school I would keep SUNY on your list.
You do realize that there is no such thing as a premed major , don’t you? You also need to familiarize yourself with the admission stats for the schools that you are interested in attending . I think that you may be surprised that your stats are average or slightly below for the schools that you are targeting . Stats in the 50th percentile will most likely not be adequate for merit . You need to realize that while your stats are commendable , you will be competing with others who also have similar or better stats. You may need to rethink your opinions on schools about being " good enough "
Fully aware that premed isn’t a major…still have 2 more years of hs. Was just curious.
UNC-CH is definitely a reach; BU’s Arts & Sciences college is more of a high-match, but their accelerated BS/MD program is probably a reach (although not an unreasonable one). My son had similar stats (lower GPA, but 1440 M/CR SAT and terrific ECs, with full-IB plus APs), and did not get into UNC-CH from out-of-state.
That is a bit rude. They stand a fair chance, as their scores are average (quite a positive for many students). Also please dont be condescending and you are a bit closed minded about scores and grades. Though his PSAT is 1300, you have to add 50-70 points to get a fair representation (though in some cases you can add 100 points) of an actual SAT. Furthermore, I am willing to bet there is something that makes them stand out in the application process, possibly their essay. In all, they stand a fair chance at both colleges, seeing that their essays and ECs hold their own
@falqa I read through the other answers and I don’t think any of them are rude. I am not sure how you support the claim that OP’s scores are average. A 1300 PSAT (even taking your +100 = 1400) is well below the average for an admitted UNC OOS student and appears below the 1450 average for BU. I definitely think that you should apply OP! But you need to apply to a wide range of schools including some you will definitely get into.
@ceilingroofgoat I may be mistaken, but I read one comment in a negative tone. I suppose it was just the way I read it that made me believe it was rude/condescending. Sorry bout that
