Please chance me for acceptance into the finest

Yeah. I'm talking about HYPS.

I would sincerely appreciate honest, critical feedback about where I stand with regards to admission to the top schools, and what I need to do to improve my chances.

I am currently going in 11th grade in a large, fairly competitive public city school.

Academics:

Total GPA:3.75; Weighted:4.25
Freshman GPA: 3.5; Weighted: 4.0
Sophomore GPA: 3.6; Weighted:4.1
Junior GPA: 4.0; Weighted: 4.5
In my school, 6 honors classes are offered per year, and during my freshman and sophomore years, I took four out of a possible six.
This year, with 5 AP classes, I have the second or third hardest courseload of anyone in my grade.
Class rank: 33 out of 365

Extracurriculars:

-Recieved an A in a Community College Microeconomics course, (9)
-School leadership program (9)
-Varsity Track.(9, 10, 11-captain 11th)
-Ranked one of the top 15 chess players in the country for my age. (9, 10, 11)
-I teach a chess class for young children at my local library every week. I have also worked as a tournament director in local tournaments. (9, 10, 11)
-Summer job at a local waterpark. (10)
-NHS. (10, 11)
-Key club. (10, 11)
-President and founder of school chess club. (11)
-Probable national merit scholar (PSAT score of 216 in Pennsylvania)
-Student Council Representative. (11)
-I have also volunteered extensively: Sierra Club, Community Food Bank, Library, Local Park, and various other environmental groups. (9, 10, 11).

My main extracurricular hooks are my involvement in both chess and track.

Last year, I got third in the city in the 400m for track, and this year I believe I have a good chance of going to States. My goal is to get my times low enough to be recruited for track.

One problem is that my grades are somewhat weak, and I am barely in the top ten percent of my class. Also, in the second semester of my sophomore year I recieved a C in my Honors Trigonometry class. However, I believe that colleges will like the academic improvement that I have shown.

I haven't taken any SATs yet, but I plan to take my first in March, and possibly a subject test after that.

What kind of chance do I have for admission into HYPS?

What can I do to improve my chances?
What kind of SAT/SAT Subject Test scores will I need?

Thanks!

Honestly, you would need some pretty amazing test scores to have a shot at HYPS. To me, it kind of sounds like you are banking on admission to an ivy, and that is just not a sure thing at all. If you could get recruited in track, that would help a lot, but you have to get attention from one of these schools.

Your Junior year GPA is definitely quite strong. Your sophomore GPA is also pretty good as well. You will need to get near perfect SAT scores to further demonstrate your academic abilities. That will help you in your college endeavors. (Btw, thanks for chancing me!)

Your rank will make it very hard without a hook. Half the class at these school are val or sal.

But isnt top 15 in the country in chess a hook? And if i get my track times down low enough to be considered for recruiting, is that a good hook?

Your chess accomplishments are awesome, especially your tutoring activity. Volunteering is great too - colleges look for people who are involved in the community. That will really set you apart. I agree with everybody else about needing awesome test scores too, though. Colleges say that "you're more than a number" but they actually use the numbers to sort the wheat from the chaff. I don't think the ivies really recruit for athletics - most of the are Div III, but great times show dedication to something and they like it. Plus, it's something to write essays about.
Good luck! :)

nice gpa, especially since it's going up. keep it going up, it looks great. make you sure do AMAZING on the SAT's, and you'll be in the competitive range for HYPS. after that it's up to chance. good luck!

A hook is: recruited athlete, URM, legacy or development. That's 40% of the class at ivies.

Stop lying they are not the finest

hmom5, what's development?

bump......

The upward trend for the three years look real good.
You have a fairly good gpa and a good list of EC's
You have a real good shot!
Also don't worry about a few spots in your rank cause that rarely makes a difference in the college process. Top ten percent is just a number and colleges usually look deeper than numbers because who would want a class full of nerdy 4.0 kids.
There has got to be some diversity somewhere and you will be able to provide that with the info you have given.
